Kauai - Shipping Hawaiian goods back home?
I'm leaving for Kauai on Wednesday. Does anyone know where there is a store that I can ship back pineapples, nuts, coffee and coconuts (the smooth shell kind)?
We will be spending the first night at the Radisson before moving to Lawai beach so we are looking at the Lihue and Kapaa areas.
We would like to take care of this the first day we are there.
We are going to be meeting friends at the airport a few days after our arrival and would like to give them fresh leis. Is there any place near the airport where you can buy them? Thanks.

If memory serves me correctly, there is a little store that sells and ships Hawaiian food products on Hwy 56 heading toward Kapaa. Look for the store on the right hand side after passing the intersection of Hwy 580. I also think you can buy fresh leis in the airport store. Or in the shopping area of Lihue, I'm sure there will be a florist. I even think Walmart sells them.

Correction to my first set of directions. The place I'm thinking of isn't as far north as Hwy. 580. Its on Hwy 56, a little north of the intersection Hwy 51 and Hwy 56. Just a few miles from the airport. Hope this helps!

The store suggested is just north of Lihu`e -- at the first signal intersection after the airport. Watch for it on the makai (ocean) side of the highway, as you are driving to the Radisson. They are the only ones here who are licensed to ship fresh produce out of the state. I haven't been inside for a few years, but they used to have all the food stuffs you've mentioned.
The best prices for fresh lei can be found at Wal-Mart. They have a h-u-g-e cooler at the front of the store, and a smaller one just indoors from the garden department. You can also purchase fresh lei at the airport floral shop (really nice, and only slightly higher priced than Wal-Mart).

carbogilligan and auntiemaria, Thank you so much for answering my questions. The store sounds pretty easy to find.
On our last trip to Maui we made the mistake of bringing back a bunch of goodies. Now everyone is reminding us
of how much they enjoyed their gifts!
Thanks again.

You can go to Hilo Hattie's and they do ship alot! nuts, coffee, chocolates etc. Don't know about the pinnaples and coconuts. I have actually bought so much on the island I have shipped them through the post office. They have boxes there you can purchase. I have also sent things back UPS which is rather expensive LOL

You might want to rethink the shipping the pineapples back, as the cost of air freight on just one of them is more than the cost of the fruit. The rest of the things are fine, but bring the pineapples home with you on the plane. There are companies on all the islands that will arrange to have the boxed and agriculturally inspected fruit waiting at the airport for you to claim it and check it in as baggage. I believe they still don't charge for additional baggage to take it home.

I like the idea of sending the coconut!
My daughter would get a kick out of it as her science teacher has requested a coconut but not like the ones we're used to seeing in the grocery store.

For heavy packages, the best way is to ship them through UPS ground. UPS doesn't allow ground service TO Hawaii but the reverse they do allow and it gets to the California coast by air, not boat, then goes on its way through typical ground transport. However, you must be sure you go to the UPS shipping center directly; a third party service will easily charge you double! Do NOT ship by USPS Parcel Post if time is crucial as that DOES go by boat -- 3 weeks minimum to CA.
USPS Priority mail can get very expensive for heavy items ($10 just for 4lbs for example) but gets all over the US mainland in under a week.

The cost to ship 2 pineapples home from kauai is $44.00. I saw a store at the Oahu airport yesterday during our layover where you can purchase them and carry home on the plane. We shipped items via fed-ex from the Hyatt, but it was mighty expensive.
