Kansas CIty, MO lifestyle

Hey everyone,
My fiance is being an offered a job in KC.We are both from NYC. I understand it will be a more laid back lifestyle which we both are already so that would not be a problem. We are both in our mid twenties so sometimes were going to want to go out and grab some drinks (not club like), we are also huge on fitness so if there are big gyms or great places to run and bike that would be wonderful. The only thing i'm skeptical about is the fact that there isnt a beach (i love the ocean) and i hear crime rate is up there =(

If anyone has some reviews of lifestyle in KC please help me out, it can help ease the decision process. Thanks !!

SURELY you would invest some time and money and go see this city. There are two of them, you know.

There's a great art museum in KCMO, the Nelson Atkins. I have to say we did not find much to do there, but we lived outside the city, for less than a year, over 10 years ago, so I am far from an expert. I hope someone less grumpy than the above poster answers you!
(You can make a hobby out of BBQ there, that I know!)

Born & raised in KC but have lived in many other parts of the country (CA,TX, Hawaii, etc). I moved back several yrs ago and believe there are many thing you'll enjoy. Housing is very affordable, weather is good 9 -10 months of the year and you're only a 3 hr flight to either coast.

I lived in the KC area for years. It is a nice city I think but I found very hot and humid in summer. There is no beach as you say but there are a few lakes close by where you can swim, boat etc and also Lake of the Ozarks which is not that far away.

I was lucky enough to live at a lake - Raintree Lake , which is actually Lee's Summit. It was a nice life- pretty easy commute into KC.
I don't really know the names of any of the big gyms but if you actually decide to move, I can get recommendations as most of my daughters old friends live there and are also into physical fitness.

Then of course there is the Royals and the Chiefs if you are into sports.

There are lots of nice rivers in Missouri for floating, canoeing - and the Katy Trail for biking (not sure where it starts)

I think you will find lots to do if you decide to move.

I hope someone less grumpy than the above poster answers you!\

HOW interesting that my post to actually VISIT a place you would LIVE was taken as "grumpy".
and how amazing that a person in their twenties would come to a TRAVEL board and ask "what is this town like"
AND then decide to move there.
I guess "grumpy" is just not in vogue. But it could be "real".
HILARIOUS. AND from someone who really COULD have offered real information because apparently they really lived there. I'm not sure I truly understand NewBE.

OH, and by the way, OP. I lived in NYC, met my DH there, and moved away from there.

Blues and Jazz: outstanding clubs and festivals
Excellent restaurants, good variety

I currently live in a suburb near KC. My DD and her husband are in their mid-20's and live even closer to Kansas City itself--they love Westport and the 39th & State Line restaurant areas. She joined a gym that has a couple of locations in that part of town, but I don't know the name.

The "Crossroads" area has really taken off recently and has a fun "First Friday" event every month with open galleries and restaurants and bars.

There are some great music venues both large (Kauffmann Center for the Performing Arts--world-class!) and small. In addition to the Nelson mentioned above, there is also the Kemper Museum of Modern Art.

To get a good idea of what is going on, here is a link to the local alternative weekly paper: www.pitch.com

And the less "alternative" weekly (it is published by the local paper): www.inkkc.com

As someone mentioned previously, housing is extremely affordable. If you have other questions, reply back!

There is a lot of neat places in and around KC. You may not be used to using a car that often, but certainly a necessity in KC.

Keep in mind that you may be thinking KCMO, but for living/lifestyle you'll want to also investigate the suburbs (which is where you may be actually living), some of which are actually in Kansas.

KCK is superior to KCMO but KCMO has the original Arthur Bryants.

KC was where Google first rolled out its fiber network. That means FAST internets.

I would not say KCK is superior to KCMO...not sure where that comes from. The Kansas suburbs (where I live) near Kansas City are not the same as Kansas City, Kansas. It does sound confusing if you don't live here. And yes, the area was the first to get Google fiber--it is rolling out this summer. I agree--you will most likely need a car. Any idea where your fiance's job is located?

spark, isn't the network only in KCK? (not other cities/suburbs).
