Kaanapali Shores

We are going to Maui for Christmas 2006. We have 15 total family members ranging in age from 65 to 2 years. Does anyone know how the Kaanapali Shores would be for us to stay for a week?

Aloha!

It has been several years since I've been to the Kaanapali Shores, so I don't have real current info.

However, it was a very pleasant property, the units were lovely, not terribly large (like the Alii down the way), but the price was right for us. The rooms were comfy, quiet, and the pool - sorry, don't remember.

The major downside to me was twofold:

1 - it was not within walking distance of the main Kaanapali Beach area, where all the shops, restaurants, and beachside sidewalk are located. It is on the other side of the Black Rock Beach which I do not believe you can climb over.

2 - the beach area was rather small and the ocean bottom when you go out into the water was filled with coral - ouch! So be sure to have your aqua shoes on or you will not be a happy camper.

But it is easily driveable to anywhere on the island. So if you have a car, it should not be a problem. I just like to walk along the promenade, and you can't do it from the condo. But once you get to Whaler's Village, park your car and you are there.

Wherever you stay, you are in Maui, with obviously a lovely family reunion going on. How wonderful for you.

Happy travels!

We stayed there a few years ago. The rooms were OK and grounds were OK.

My biggest complaint was that their idea of "ocean view" rooms means bring your binoculars and look hard. Too far away to hear the surf, thats for sure. If you take a look at some pictures of their property, you can see what I mean. In fact, the rooms were so close to the highway, we were bothered by the traffic noise. I learned a lesson on that one as one of my main pleasures in Hawaii is sleeping listining thre surf. Also, to use outdoor grills, I had to go to the park next door.

I am very careful now to understand exactly what ocean front and ocean view means.

We stayed that the Mahana last time we went, it is absolutely ocean front.

Hi, I do not know what spokaneman is talking about, first of all, you are off the main highway, the street The Shores is on is a cut-off - there is no traffic noise. Also, there is not a park next door.
We will soon be returning there, 5th time, we love it. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. We did not have an ocean front room, but an ocean view. I could prepare coffee in the morning , see the ocean, without any additional aid.
There is an excellent on-site restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner - we have enjoyed all of our very reasonably-priced meals there. There are many amenities at this location. The grounds are lovely. I do not hesitate to recommend this location to you and your family.

We stayed at the Kaanapali Shores in January, family of 7 (ranging from 80 to 13 years old) in a 2-bedroom unit and thought it was very good. There are 2 pools, an adult pool and then a shallow pool that our kids really enjoyed. Beach area was very small however. The lobby area is beautiful with birds and a waterfall, and the restaurant was quite good although we only ate their once for dinner. Our room overlooked the shallow pool and sunning lawn and we had no noise from the road at all. There were some rowdies down by the hot tub one night but we called the front desk and they broke it up right away. Our room was very nice with a huge master bedroom with ensuite, a smaller bedroom with twin beds, and then a pullout couch in the living room. The pullout couch was very comfortable for sleeping (as opposed to the one we had at the Waikiki Banyan on Oahu which just about broke my back). The kitchen was small but adequate and even had a washer/dryer. There was a TV in each bedroom + one in the living room so there was no fighting over what show to watch. Location was great as it's very close to Lahaina (5 to 10 minute drive). There's a small plaza across the street with a grocery store, pizzeria, a couple of other restaurants, an ice cream parlor. We found it very convenient and we would certainly recommend it. We got a discount on the room using the Entertainment Book. I believe we saved about $100/night.
