Where would a good location be to stay at for one night between the airport and Mendenhall glacier/public transportation? Found out about the Glacier Express "blue bus." How is public transportation to and from other trailheads in the city?
There are two of us. Thanks.

We stayed closer to downtown at the Capital Inn. Which was really comfortable. We took a cab to Mendenhall because we were short on time, but you can take the city bus for 1.50 and it leaves you 3/4 of a mile form the visitor center. We did take the city bus to the Salmon Hatchery which was a little complicated but the locals and bus driver were very helpful. The innkeepers were also very helpful in helping pick our activities and getting us there. Breakfast was also yummy!
Hello All -
Thanks for all your help and responses. We had a FANTASTIC trip to Alaska. Great weather - Yes!!! And with your help, the itinerary we planned went perfectly.
Hoping to get back to Alaska in the springtime to Fairbanks to see the Northern Lights. We think we saw them briefly one night while on the ferry at 2AM as it left Wrangell, but it was just a glimpse. Who has been to Chena Hot Springs for that?
Thanks again.

P.S. We did get to the Mendenhall Glacier during our afternoon at the airport. The fast ferry boat/bus tour we took from Haines actually detoured for us and one other passenger and dropped us off at the airport (nice!). We took a cab from the airport to the glacier and that worked out great. And of course the cab drivers were full of local info. And the food at the airport cafe was actually very good - dinner there was delicious (salmon melt).
If you go back in winter, be sure to stop back by Haines and go see the bald eagles along the Chilkat river -

The largest concentration of bald eagles in the world occurs there because the Chilkat doesn't freeze. We were there during Thanksgiving week one year and the eagles were everywhere. Eagles in trees (and the ground) were as numerous as oranges on trees. It was amazing. That time of year is a good time to see the northern lights too.
