June 2015 Trip to Oregon

Below was the itinerary for this trip to Oregon and the Redwood Forest NP in CA. Hope it will help someone planning a trip similar to this.

Day 1
Portland in the morning for the Dragon Boat races and The Grand Floral Parade.
Mount Saint Helens in the afternoon-very good.
Overnight at Kelso,WA.

Day 2
Driving to Astoria, Ecola State Park, and Cannon Beach in the morning-a lot of fog in the morning, clearing in the afternoon.
Lunch at The Fish Peddlers, Bay City-very good clam chowder and fresh oysters, two thumbs up.
Overnight at Clarion Surfrider Hotel-good stay but the heavy fog made no visibility of the ocean.
Devils Punchbowl in the evening.

Day 3
Tide pooling at Yaquina Lighthouse-very good.
Excellent coastal views from Orford to Harris Beach.
Coastal walk at Harris Beach-very good
Overnight at Crescent City.

Day 4
Castle Rock in the morning at Crescent.
Driving to Redwood Forest National Park was very good.
Newton B. Drury Scenic Pkwy is excellent.
Bald Hill road to Lady Bird Johnson Grove is a special experience.
The High Bluff overlook is also a good short side trip.
Battery Point Lighthouse at Crescent City is a delightful surprise.
Dinner at The Good Harvest Cafe was good.

Day 5
Driving through the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park in the morning.
Simpson Reed Trail by Walker road is a trail into the enchanted forest, absolutely fascinating.
Grants Pass - Hellgate Jetboats cruise to Hellsgate Canyon at noon was very good- the splashes were a lot of fun, the 360 degrees fast turns were exciting and wet!
Overnight at Medford.

Day 6
Arrive Crater Lake National Park at 9:30am,watched the park's film.
Gorgeous day to visit the park, clear blue sky, trail to Sun Notch overlook for Phantom Ship's view was very enjoyable-Crater Lake is absolutely beautiful.
Wild flowers Garden trail is short and pleasant.
Historic Lodge area on the west rim is gorgeous, the lake views is fantastic with the Wizard Island below the rim.
Watchmen Peak overlook has the iconic view of Wizard Island.
Cleetwood Cove trail to the lake would be very nice except for the relentless attacked of the giant mosquitoes-cannot even stop for a minute to enjoy the view.
It is good to view and touch the lake up close. People were jumping off the cliff to the lake, the water was so clear that reflections can be seen clearly on the lake's surface. The best was no mosquitoes by the lake!
Leaving the park through the north entrance to Bend.
Overnight at Bend.

Day 7
Leaving Bend for Mount Hood in the morning.
Stopped at Smith Rocks State Park for a little. Too hot a day to do any hiking, left for Mount Hood.
Along the highway, Bachelor Mountain, Sisters Mountains, Washington Mountain, Jefferson Mountain, and Mount Hood can be seen on a clear day. A very pleasant and scenic highway towards Mount Hood.
Snow covered Mount Hood is beautiful. People still can skin on the slope. The historic lodge is really something to marvel about. It is definite worth a stop at Mount Hood.
Leaving Mount Hood after lunch towards the Columbia Gorge. The waterfalls are good, but expect to have tons of tourists everywhere, especially at the Multnomah Falls.
Overnight at Clackamas.

Day 8
The drive from Clackamas to Silver Falls State Parks was slow with lots of traffic lights.
Arrived at the North Falls trailhead around 10am, hiked the North Falls trail but not the upper North Falls. Indeed it is a very beautiful falls that let one goes behind the falls-two thumbs up for this falls.
Covered 9 of the ten falls on the trail, it is well worth the effort. Most of the falls are with running water, and there are 4 of them that have trails lead behind the falls. Definitely worth the miles of hike lead to the falls. At least half a day for this state park.
Leaving Oregon at night. It was another good trip.
