July / August Get-away

My wife and I would like to take a 4-5 day break in late July or August and cannot decide where to go. We like historic architecture and touring historic homes. Someplace close to the ocean or gulf with a nice pool and good food would be great. We have taken a few trips but are not seasoned travelers by any means. We went to Key West 2 years ago and loved the accommodations and the pools at the Marquesa, the great dining and the ability to get around without a car. We went to Charleston last year and loved all the old homes and mansions. We are looking for a nice mix of the above but RELAXATION is priority. Does this place exist? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

All of these places will be hot & humid, just a warning. Savannah, New Orleans, lastly (if you can forget the beach part) Natchez, Ms. Although it is better to go during pilgrammage time to view all of the mansions.

How about Newport RI - I know it's not overly exotic, but it has its charm.

I second the San Diego/La Jolla idea. We went at the end of July once and the weather was great. Everyday was sunny and warm but the ocean was a cool 70 and my daughter refused to go in! We live near the gulf and our water temp is almost 90 so you can see why she thought it was too cold! It's very relaxed with great restaurants, the famous zoo, and Coronado is only a short drive away. Coronado has that hotel made famous in Some Like It Hot and many Fodorites have commented on what a great place that is. We didn't stay there but it is beautiful and right on the water. We also drove north along the coastal highway, what a view! Good luck finding a great place for your break!
