JoeTro's San Antonio trip report

As promised, I'll do a quick San Antonip trip report:

Saturday:

I flew in from DFW and took a taxi from the airport to Marriott Rivercenter. Fare was $29, including tip. Made a mistake and probably should have just gone with uberx.

Putzed around the hotel a litle bit and then took uberx to the McNey. Fair was $16 one-way, which was pretty steep for a museum, and then the $10 admission fee on top of it. Nonetheless, I really loved the McNey. Beautiful buildings and history, a little bit of everything in terms of the art, really nice staff, and an awesome patio/courtyard area. Just a really neat and quirky museum.

I then took uber back to the main square and walked around a little of the Cathedral and Spanish Governor's house. There seemed to be a wedding about to begin at the Cathedral, so I just peaked inside. I thought the Spanish Governor's house was okay but not worth $5. Furthermore, it was incredibly hot. I did a bit more walking around the area and ended up at Zinc for lunner around 3:30. I cancelled Biga's because I was already spending a good amount of money. And, for $19, I got a great glass of gruner wine, amazing fish and chips, and a yummy house salad. I love the place and plan to go back from happy hour tomorrow before I leave.

Your taxi ride from DFW to Marriott Rivercenter was one heck of a bargain at $29!!

I'm not a big Bigga fan and have enjoyed Zinc too. You did well by that switch IMHO. If you like Tex-Mex, how about Rosario's for dinner tonight? Gosh when you think about admission to the McNay then the price of admission to the Spanish Governor's house, the McNay is a huge bargain, and the latter really not worth the money, is it? Are you going to try to see any of the missions other than the Alamo, and is King William District on your list of "to do's"?

I paid 21.65 back to airport in uberx. Sadly no time for other missions. I will post rest of report once I get back to computer. But yes mcnay was a greater value if not for transport. So was Briscoe which at $5 was same as governor's palace and so much more enjoyable.

Sunday:

Walked to SA Museum of Art. I wasn't a fan of the surrounding area, although maybe it was just the route I took. A lot of empty buildings and just didn't feel super safe. Plus it was hot! I maybe should have walked through riverwalk.

I enjoyed the museum though did not do Matisse. The pop up resto was good but very little seating and long waits for food. I liked that the museum had a little of everything and especially appreciated the Oceania art since was in Oz last month. However, I was very disappointed in European art. Spent three hours including lunch.

Took uber to briscoe and was really floored by this museum. So much art we just don't see, and beautiful and colorful paintings. A lot of money went into this place, and it shows. Bought a couple items at Macy's Rivercenter, walked back to hotel to relax a bit, and then had dinner at Boudros. Bill was $15 for fish cakes appetizer, fries with amazing sauce, and small house salad. Waitress was awesome. So in love with this place and Zinc. Had a drink at Bonham Exchange which was a bit campy and young for my taste.

Monday:

Walked to the Alamo. I had forgotten how lush the gardens were. I found the complex confusing and unfortunately the theatre area was closed, so no film. Was there about an hour, mostly because I spent too much time circling the gardens and figuring out how to enter. I then did a loop around the river walk and stopped off at esquire. Had a lunch special for $8 - an amazing pulled pork sandwich and chips. Also had ginger beer. Went back to hotel to shower, relax and pack. Did some reading. Had happy hour again at Zinc. Ok calamari and a good orange martini $10.50 total. Uber back to airport.
