Joe Tro's July 4th Houston trip report

Jump to last reply

Thanks for the advice - quick trip report here.

Flew into Hobby from Dallas Love Thursday, July 4th. Took Super Shuttle to Marriott West Loop, fare of $23. The hotel is definitely undergoing some renovations and looks a bit dated. Nonetheless the service was great. As a Gold Member, I received a concierge lounge floor. The evening appetizers were very good and I wish I'd had more. The deserts were marginal.

Anyway, I took the included shuttle to the Galleria and walked around/shopped. Had lunch at Cheesecake Factory. Had intended to have dinner at seafood restaurant near the hotel but that was the corporate HQ, not an actual restaurant. So, I had dinner in the hotel restaurant instead, which was actually quite good.

Checked out Friday morning and took the Shuttle to the JW. Much nicer, with a great corner room. Took a cab (fare $20) to Museum of Fine Arts. I really enjoyed the collection and stayed about 3 hours. Had a nice lunch in Cafe Express. I took a $6 cab to Menil Collection, which I must say I found VERY disappointing. Just not my style of art, though the Byzantine stuff was unique. From there, a snack at Sweet Cup, very early happy hour dinner at Canopy, and drinks at JR's before taking the bus back to Westheimer.

Saturday was more enjoying the JW and Galleria before leaving.

I had intended to visit Bayou bend and was disappointed I didn't make it. On the other hand, it would have meant expensive cab fare to/from. Next time!
