JFK from New England - car, bus or train?

I am trying to arrange the last few days of our holiday in April. After spending a few days in NYC and Boston we will pick up a car in Boston. Our flight home is from JFK on a Thursday evening. At this stage we can be flexible where we spend our last night - probably somewhere in Connecticut or Rhode Island. Any advice on these or other options? -

1 Drop the car off at JFK. This means 1 (or 2) days extra rental, a drop-off charge and braving the traffic on the way to JFK.

2 Public transport direct to JFK from a nearby town or city. I believe that if we drop the car off in Connecticut then some companies do not charge extra. However train is quite pricey and I think it means going into Manhattan and finding our way to JFK from there. I have had trouble finding buses straight to JFK from Connecticut.

At this stage I am inclined to go for the car option - unless any of you guys know better! We are 2 adults and a 14 year old.

Cheers
Rick

If you can drop the car off in Hartford, CT and can get to the bus depot there is a bus that will take you to JFK and LaGuardia and avoid going to either Penn Station or the Port Authority.

Metro North trains ( http://www.mta.info/mnr/html/plannin...s/nhl-fare.htm ) from Connecticut to Grand Central Terminal are not unreasonbly priced. The New York Airport Service ( http://www.nyairportservice.com/fares.html ) fare from Grand Central (and other locations) is $12 - $13 each, or $5 if you get yourself to Jamaica.

Or, drop off the car in Stamford Conn. at the metro center (Train Station) Hertz and Avis, stay at the Hyatt in Greenwich or Marriott in Stamford and have CT Limo take you to JFK from the hotels.

Or drop the car off in Boston and take the train or Delta shuttle back to NYC and stay there.
