JFK Airport to East Rutherford NJ

Hi!! I was wondering if someone could help this first time Aussie? I will be arriving at JFK Airport and need to get to the Sheraton at East Rutherford (Meadowlands). I was looking for the quickest, cheapest and most direct way to get there from JFK airport please.

Quickest and Cheapest are mutually exclusive in this case

Cheapest is to take the subway from JFK to the NY Port Authority, then take a NJ Transit bus which stops directly at the hotel. Cost (subway $1.50 + bus $~2.50 = aprox $4.00)

Quickest is to take a cab, which i would think will cost you about $50-60.

The bottom line to do this 'reasonably' is to get to the NY Port Authority (by whatever means you choose, be it shuttle bus, subway, etc) and then take the NJ Transit bus.

I've seen a post at www.BetterBidding.com that talks about the various options from getting from the 3 NYC airports into Manhattan, i'd check that out to figure how you're going to get to the NY Port Authority (go to New York, then Hotel List and Tips, then you'll see a post about getting to the hotel from NY airports), and then take the NJ Transit bus from the Port Authority to the hotel (call the hotel to find out the bus number that stops at their hotel... oh yeah, you're in Australia, i'll try to call for u later today to get the info and i'll post back).

By the way, the hotel is nice.

I suggest you call the hotel. According to the hotel's website, they have "limited" shuttle service between the hotel and the airport (probably means Newark airport) and between the hotel and "other destinations". If they have a shuttle service to/from the Port Authority terminal in New York City, you could get there from JFK by bus and then take the shuttle to the hotel.

New York Airport Service Express Bus to Port Authority Bus Terminal (Airport Bus Center) 42nd Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan

Departs every 15 - 30 minutes
6:15 AM to 11:10 PM
45 - 65 minutes, longer at peak hours
Cost: $13
telephone: (718) 875-8200

There should be a bus stop in front of each terminal at JFK. Your bus would say something like "Port Authority/Manhattan". Take a look at the JFK website at http://www.quickaid.com/airports/jfk/ for a map. (Click on Map of Ground Transportation Services. There are other transport options mentioned on the website, you may want to look at these.) You may also want to call JFK or the Airport Services Express Bus people to find out exactly where the bus stops at the international terminal.

The hotel may also suggest other areas where they could pick you up, like a PATH subway station in Weehauken or Hoboken (both in New Jersey) or the Newark, New Jersey train station (also called Pennsylvania Station like the one in Manhattan, a bit confusing). They might also suggest you go by bus from JFK to Newark airport and then you could take their shuttle from Newark airport to the hotel. This would be longer as it means going into Manhattan and then changing to another bus for Newark airport, but it is an option.

Hope you are not planning on using the hotel as a base to explore New York City, as it is really not convenient for that. It's fine for conventions and some New Jersey places. If you are primarily going to be in NYC, I would stay in Manhattan itself. There are lots of hotels in NYC in the same price range, run a search here.

Although not as convenient as staying directly IN NYC, this hotel is fine as a cheap(er) alternative. It's often obtained on Priceline for $40 or so, and normal rates area usually about double that. Rates in NYC can be had thru Priceline for about $80-100, with normal rates being $150-200+. So when comparing identical booking methods, this hotel can cost you about half. Of course, you then have to consider whether or not it's worth your time and add in the bus fare. Trip from this hotel to NY Port Authority should take about 20 mintues.

I called the hotel and they said the bus# 322 is the bus that stops in front of the hotel, but i couldn't find it at the NJ Transit website, so i'll try to double check in the next day or two if i can get a different desk clerk on the phone.

I think going to Newark and taking the free hotel shuttle (if avaialable) would be a mistake. The most direct route would be NJ Transit bus from the Port Authority (IMO).

I've only heard positive reviews about the hotel, although there isn't too much within walking distance from there besides the Meadowlands Sports Complex.

Thank you ALL so very much for your great help. AND THANK YOU ‘HOTEL’ FOR MAKING THOSE CALLS!!!

Actually I am staying in NYC for 9 days. Thanks to this great site I have planned my whole trip for August. I am staying at the Hotel Beacon, I know that I can get around ok on public transport, it is cheaper to get Broadway tix from TKTS (just gotta find the other one that’s not in Times Square), found a heap of “other” places to go and can get around the Statue of Liberty for free on the Staten Island Ferry. And through a bit of research and lots of people asking the same stuff this is the very first question I have had to ask. Unfortunately I did pick up that JFK was the least accessible airport but I have gone for comfort and price for my 22 hour flight which means I am stuck at JFK. I am staying at the Sheraton @ Meadowlands for one night only as I have an organised trip in New Jersey for 2 days, the day after I arrive. I chose the hotel in Jersey because I wanted a decent, inexpensive place to sleep without having to go to far when I wake up. I realise that this is going to be a bit of a hassle so I may just end up taking a cab. In saying that I will copy these messages and research it further on the internet. Again thank you for your kindess and helping so much

Since the bulk of your stay is going to be at the Hotel Beacon, I'll suggest the following plan - this assumes that you can or will bring a small extra bag that can hold your gear for the two day NJ trip:

Take a cab to the Hotel Beacon from JFK. Leave your primary large suitcase in storage at the Beacon (every hotel I'm familiar with will accomodate this type of request.

Then take small bag, get subway to Port Authority and take NJ Transit bus to the Sheraton, subsequently returning to the Beacon by same means.

IMHO this combines the best of convenience and economy.
