Can anyone recommend a hotel near JFK that has an outdoor pool? My flight does not depart until mid-afternoon, and I would like to relax by the pool until I have to leave for the airport. It sounds like the Holiday Inn might have an indoor/outdoor pool, but it doesn't get the best reviews. Thanks.

Red rocks rock!

The JFK hotels are mostly dreadful and so is the area. None of them have outdoor pools to my knowledge. The Holiday Inn pool (indoor) and health club are closed for renovation. This is NYC where an outdoor pool can be used maybe 3 months/year. If you rent a car, you could actually go to the beach for the morning at Rockaway or Atlantic Beach but for a hotel pool, you'd have to go east into Long Island or west into Manhattan.
And not many hotels in Manhattan have pools either - and certainly not outdoor (it's way too cold most of the year). There are a couple of budget placs that do have inddor -but then you're trekking in/out of the cityfor several hours - plus the cost of taxi or AirTrain/train.
I'd suggest checking the www.hotels.com site and plug in JFK. The site usually lists hotel amenities. Pools in NY are unusual, so don't be surprised if there aren't any at the airport.
The only outdoor pool I know of at a hotel in the city is the Travel Inn on W. 42nd St.
I agree that JFK area hotels are awful. At the one I stayed (forget the name, but it would have not have been the cheapest) I just locked myself in the room and put a suitcase against the door. I was not too happy that they put me as a single female traveler near the very end of a long hallway. Couldn't wait to get out of there.
Take the AirTrain to the Howard Beach subway station. From there catch an A train in the direction of Far Rockaway--you're just a few stops to the beach. You might switch at the next stop, Broad Channel, to catch the branch of the A train to the Rockaway Beach end.
ellenem, would you really want to spend the day at the beach and then get on a plane without so much as a shower?
No, I wouldn't. Nor would I want to go to an airport hotel to sit by its outdoor pool. I'm just offering an option to the OP. Perhaps just sitting on the boardwalk would be enough. different strokes . . .
The Sports Club LA gym on the UES has a pool and roof-top terrace. Maybe you could enquire about a day pass or maybe book a spa visit to get access. Granted, it's a bit of a trek from JFK but it's right next to the Queensboro bridge so there wouldn't much driving on City streets.
