Itinerary questions for San Antonio/NewBraunfels, etc.

We will be in San Antonio for 2 days using another day to drive to Fredricksburg. The 4th day we will leave SA headed to Austin.
We would like to visit New Braunfels on the way to Austin.
My question is: should we just spend the 3rd night in New Braunfels instead of San Antonio? And, on that 3rd day is Fredricksburg or Guerne (sp?) a better choice for a day trip from SA?
Thanks for any help!

Shadow: You're talking about some really short driving distances here. From downtown San Antonio to New Braunfels is only 30 miles. From New Braunfels to Austin is about 50 miles. All you do is drive directly north on Interstate 35 -- very easy. I would say there was no need to change hotels, unless you just want to get out of the big city. New Braunfels is a small town, known mainly for some wonderful restaurants, tubing on the Guadalupe River, the Gruene historical area, and Schlitterbahn waterpark. We have stopped there dozens of times just to eat. Our favorite is Omas Haus, a great German restaurant just off the interstate on Hwy 46 S. It has wonderful food, a small gift shop, and sells fantastic homemade candy (especially the divinity). Our second favorite is Clear Springs Cafe, a very good seafood place about 2 miles farther down Hwy. 46. A lot of people like the Gristmill restaurant in Gruene, overlooking the river, but the only time I ate there, it was nothing special. I don't know anything about Fredericksburg, but I do think New Braunfels is worth a visit. I've only visited the Gruene area once (about 10 years ago), and frankly, I don't remember a lot about it, but we stop at Omas or Clear Springs to eat every chance we get.

We stayed in the Canyon Lake area and went to New Braunfels and went through the Caves there and then the Wild Animal Park. We had a great time feeding the animals from our car..and we were 4 'senior citizens' doing this On the way to Fredericksburg we stopped at the LBJ ranch and took a tour through his ranch and through the National Heritage Farm. Stopped at the Wildflower store. If you are at the wildflower store and gardens at the right time you'll see wonderful flowers. We only drove through Fredrickburg, but there were lots of interesting shops to wander through there. We had lunch at an old bank, I think.

Hi there--I live in San Antonio and would recommend a visit to the German settled Fredericksburg--we frequently take out of town guests there. We live on the north side of town and it takes me approx. 1.5 hours max to get there. It is home of the outstanding Admiral Nimitz Museum, for more information check out http://www.texasoutside.com/Frederic...mitzframes.htm
In addition, there are lots of wonderful shops, restaurants, bakeries there and if you're interested in hiking Enchanted Rock is close by, for more information check out http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/park/enchantd/enchantd.htm Since you're headed to Austin you could stop in Gruene along the way. We moved here from the east coast 15 years ago and absolutely love it here--I hope you enjoy a great trip!

OK, thanks everybody! We will use Day 3 for time in Fredricksburg and continue to stay in San Antonio and leave on Day four-stop in New Braunfels on our way to Austin.
I will do a trip report when we get back
(late June).
Thanks!
