Itinerary Ideas for 2nd Trip to NYC ... without kids this time

Jump to last reply

My husband and I are headed to NYC for 3 1/2 days in June. We arrive mid-day on Wednesday at La Guardia and depart on Saturday at 5 from JFK. Staying at Hyatt Place Midtown (new hotel .. .had points) for one night and Sheraton Times Square (points) the other two nights. We'd love ideas for our shorter trip this time since we've already hit all of the "big sites." We know our favorites and might revisit, but would also like new adventures in the city.

Things we have already done before and were our very FAVORITES on our last trip (as a guide to what we enjoyed the most): Central Park, The Met, Top of the Rock, Pearl River Mart/Shopping in that area, High Line Park, B&H Photo store, Roosevelt Tram, Wicked musical, Stomp show, Grand Central Station, rooftop bar (don't remember the name of it), eating at all sorts of different restaurants including pizza, Shake Shack, indian in Curry Hill, kebabs at the food stands, Donut Plant, the soup filled wonton Chinese place in Chinatown, and Sarge's deli.

Things we have already done before on our last trip (not favorites, but fun): Statue of Liberty via Staten Island Ferry, Wall Street, South Street Seaport, Brooklyn Bridge walked across, 9/11 Memorial, Tenement Museum and explored East Village some, Chinatown, Little Italy, Century 21, Times Square, walked all over Greenwich Village and through Soho, Washington Square.

Our general interests: We are in our early 40s (have kids, but they aren't coming!), enjoy photography and great views or photo ops, running/nature, cooking, shopping (preferably great deals for good brands), eating out at restaurants with great - not pretentious - food and unique atmosphere including ethnic and different foods, plays and musicals, live music (mostly contemporary), dancing but not with the 20-something crowd in typical "hip" clubs. We don't drink alot and tend to eat relatively healthy (but are willing to splurge sometimes too!)

We plan to get a subway pass and will not have a car.

My thoughts were:

Day 1: Eataly and have lunch on the rooftop restaurant, Flatiron District, Madison Square, shopping along Fifth Avenue including a stop at Loehmann's on 7th and Adorama photography store. Any other suggestions? Evening go see a theater or musical production ... any recommendations? We saw a few of interest including Pippin, Newsies, Rock of Ages (we are 80s kids), or Jersey Boys .. .but open to ideas. Dinner after the show - recommendations for something ethnic or just excellent/unique (budget no more than $50-60/plate).

Day 2: Subway to Central Park to run. Stop for a bite for breakfast and enjoy more of the sites in the park than we did on our last visit - perhaps the zoo or Belleveu Castle and just meandering around or renting bikes. Subway back to cleanup and checkout. Subway to Sheraton to leave our bags. Was thinking of heading to Brooklyn for the afternoon and evening, but not sure what to see, do , shops, eating, etc. there. There is a free concert in the park that night in Brooklyn at the Betsy Head Park. Perhaps come back and relax on a rooftop bar near the Sheraton Times Square. Suggestions?

Day 3: Central Park for a run, grab a bite and back to hotel. Go see a museum or shopping ... Madison Avenue or near Central Park? Lunch at Plaza Hotel in the food vendors area - taste some different things to share. Another museum or site or shopping in the afternoon? Dinner and then comedy club (Upright Citizens Brigade).

Day 4: Central Park for a run ... final day in the city ... suggestions after we check out mid morning until 3 p.m. Sites on subway ride toward JFK (or other area)?

Thanks for your suggestions for some interesting places to visit based on our "favorites" from last time and interests. Restaurant suggestions as well (we aren't big breakfast eaters .. so mainly lunch and dinner spots).
