itinerary help (starting niagra falls)

We need an itinerary for 9 days of vacation in mid-June. Our needs are:

- Start with 2 nights in Niagra Falls
- End in New York for 1 night (ok if we will fly there)
- Prefer warmer places (I think this can affect some Canada locations)
- Not too long driving (flights are ok)
- See nature (not camping)
- Romantic

Any ideas are welcome!

How long is "not too long" driving?

You could probably spend the entire time inNew York state if you wanted to, and keep the driving to 4-6 hours a stretch...Finger lakes, Adirondacks, Howe Caverns, Cooperstown, Glimmerglass, Hudson Valley, and finally New York City.

Really, there' say lot of ground you could possibly cover. Is there any particular place you definitely want to see? Do you want to cover historic homes, gardens, a museum or two, or only nature? Do you definitely want to reach the coast, or are mountains and lakes and waterfalls enough?

Well you can;t cover those 4 states in 9 days - since Niagara Falls if a full day drive from both NYC and Boston.

You are going to have to cut back a lot - select 3 or at most 4 places - INCLUDING Niagara Falls and NYC with day trips from a couple of centers.

If you rally want to see Boston for instance I would fly there from Niagara Falls, then rent a car and head to the Hudson Valley for some beautiful outdoors before you head to NYC.

Also, it would help if you give us some idea of budget, esp for lodging (a specific amount, not reasonable - which can mean anything.)

Thanks for the comments.

@china_cat:
Ideally no more than 3 driving hours a day... flights are ok.
Outside NYC nature is our first priority (not camping, more of day trips).
Coast is optional.

@nytraveler:
Boston is not a must, only Niagra Falls and NYC. Trying to decide what to do between them, and since flights are optional though of Quebec City and maybe a drive along the Maine Coast or Newport.
Lodging can reach 200$/night.

Mid-June might be nice for the Maine coast if you could fly into Portland. The lupines are blooming then but may be more noticeable from Searsport north. We went to a lupine festival on the Blue Hill Peninsula one year (just before Mount Desert Island/ Acadia). It would be cold for a boat trip. I have not been to Maine Coastal Gardens in Boothbay for several years but that would be close enough to Camden for a day trip to drive up Mt Battie for the beautiful view overlooking Camden Harbor.

Lupine festivals are also held in NH's White Mountains. You would fly into Manchester NH. There are fields of blooming flowers in some locations such as Polly's Pancake Parlor. You could stay overnight in Meredith NH (about 2 hours more or less from Manchester airport) which is a very pretty town on Lake Winnipesaukee. We took the grandchildren to Squam Lakes Science Center last summer. They have a lovely garden plus a nice trail to see NH wildlife in natural habitats. The mountains are just north of the lake. We have not taken the pontoon boat ride on Squam Lake in many years but it's a smaller lake nearby where On Golden Pond was filmed. Rustic cottages have been in the same family for years and since there is little public access to the lake, it has stayed very nice.

Going from Niagara Falls across to Quebec and then all the way down the coast is going to give you more than 3 hours driving per day - unless you drive every single day - and then you won;t have a lot of time to see/do things.

For example:

Niagara Falls to Quebec will be a solid 10 (TEN) hour drive - probably an hour more if you come from the US side - so nothing like what you want with 3 hours per day

Quebec to Portland ME will take about 6 hours to drive

Portland to Newport is only about 4 hours, but if you want to do Quebec to Newport it will take more than 9 hours

I know you mention flying but it seems that alternating driving and flying when you have so little time will again drive up time getting to places rather than being there (any flight will take at least 5 hours when you consider getting to the airport, security, waiting to board - and then getting from an airport to wherever you are going) plus renting and then dropping off rental cars a couple of times

Not sure where you are from, but you don't seem to have a good handle on how far apart things are and how long it will take to get from one to another.
