ISO Karebear/Upper West Side Info

I am looking for advice from anyone who lives in NYC's Upper West Side (or from anyone very familiar with the area).

I've received some great general NYC travel advice from this forum. Now, I'm hoping to get some more specific info about the Upper West Side neighborhood.

My daughter and I are coming to New York the end of this month. She will be staying on in New York to attend school. (My daughter will be attending AMDA....American Musical & Dramatic Academy...not Columbia.) Her school & dorm apartment are both located in the Upper West Side, so that's where I've chosen for us to stay. I want to explore her new neighborhood with her, so we can both get a feel for it. I'm looking for restaurants, coffee shops, casual bars...anything and everything. (We definitely need to find a bank in her neighborhood!)

Any info on great neighborhood spots would be appreciated.

Hi!
bank: there is a Chase bank on 79th and Broadway, but there may be one closer to your daughter's school that I don't know about.

Restaurants nearby that I recommend are (you can do a search on citysearch to find the addresses):
Niko's
Ruby Foo's
EJ's
River
Ocean Grill ( this is a little more pricey)
Isabella's
Sarabeth's
Cafe Mozart

There is a really nice Loews movie theatre on 68th and Broadway.

The Museum of Natural History is in the neighborhood.

Check out Filene's Basement on 79th and Broadway for good deals.

The Fairway supermarket is around 75th and Broadway.

It is a lovely and safe area. Have fun.

I have to tell you about a hidden gem on the UWS: the Boat Basin Cafe. It's alll the way west on 79th Street, as far as you can go (go under the highway, and take the stairs down). The restaurant is open air, but in a cavern-like setting under the highway, with views of the Hudson River - a most awesome setting! The food isn't really that good, but you could also go just for drinks - or just to walk through it. Though, don't go there on a weekday evening after 7 - it can get pretty packed with happy-hour people. From there, you can take a nice stroll up and down Riverside Park, and watch the people, the boats, and the little kids playing tee-ball. It's SUCH a pleasant park.

Your daughter's going to school in a GREAT neighborhood - one of my favorites (many of my good friends used to live there) - I still go up there as often as possible. Broadway, Amsterdam, and Columbus are all great for walking, shopping, and restaurants. And of course, Central Park is right there!!

This is great! Exactly the information I was looking for. Thank you!

I am getting pretty pumped about our trip. I am so happy (and a bit envious) that my daughter will be living in the most alive, eclectic and exciting city in the world. Now I will have an excuse to visit NYC more often.

Please continue to add comments or suggestions to this thread. I welcome any advice.

thanks again!

My 1 Thai Baht worth (1 Baht=$.02).

West Side Resturant (69th and Broadway) is a great little cafe/coffee shop that my wife and I frequent. Very reasonably priced breakfasts, good location, plesant staff, pretty packed on the weekends.

Down the street (68th) is a Food Emporium grocery store, and another block down is a Barnes & Noble. The stretch of Broadway from 65th up to around 80th is just a great stretch of New York road to know, that is if you don't mind sidestepping a little construction.

UWS is a fabulous New York neighborhood, she will love it and you should feel comfortable with her digs. Best of luck!

Okay, I had to reply only because I saw something which I could not ignore. Travelbear, I live across the street from the West Side Diner you say you enjoy so much...its horrible! I won't get into it, except that the food is absolutely tastless...the omelets are obviously scooped out of a vat of egg and uchhh! must stop now. Just one avenue over on Columbus there are soo many great cafes to eat wonderful breakfasts, even with outdoor seating on nice summer days.

Sorry, don't mean to jump on anyone, but knowing how bad it is, I couldn't help myself. carry on and have a nice day.

The school is in the Ansonia Hotel on Broadway - 73rd to 74th St. There is a Citibank on 72nd just east of Broadway. There is another bank on the northeast corner of 72nd and Broadway (North Fork Bank?). THe Fairway Market is on Broadway and 74th, across the street from the school. The are literally dozens of restaurants in the immediate vicinity. Subway station is one block away and there is a bus stop in front of the hotel.
