Is this a decent airfare for San Diego to Maui?

There will be five of us (3 adults and 2 kids) going to Maui during my older son's spring break in April. I did a search on expedia and got prices in the 630 - 750 price range pp per ticket. On Hawaiian Airlines website, I got a price of $589 including taxes.

I know it would be cheaper to go from LAX, but my husband really hates flying in/out/through there and avoids it at all costs. The Hawaiian air flight goes nonstop SAN to Honolulu then on to Maui. I think it's a decent fare considering it's spring break. What do you all think? I'm holding flights and have until tomorrow to buy them at current fare.

I don't think it's such a bad fare considering when you're flying. We're going at Xmas time and our fares were about $530. One way I found to make it cheaper was to call American Airlines vacations and get a package deal on airfare with a rental car. That brought the price of air down from 7 something to 530, and the rental car was only @250 per week. You might try that. good luck!

SandyP - I am glad you asked this question because my daughter and her friends want to go to Hawaii for their spring break (they go to UC Irvine). Their break is actually from March 25 to April 3. I was also looking at airfare from San Diego, OC and LAX. I saw that they were high on Expedia. I looked on the Hawaiian Airlines website and I was actually able to get $584 from San Diego. If it makes you feel any better, I also checked from LAX, it was $579. So you aren't saving anything by not using LAX. Of course you have to change planes as you mentioned but I'm with you, I would rather do that than drive to LA and mess with LAX. I did check direct flights to Maui from LAX, American Airlines does have them but they are in the $650 or above range.

I would like some advice, too. The $589 airfare seems a little high to me also. Does it ever go down during spring break/Easter time?

Since we are on this subject, none of the girls have ever been to Hawaii. Where would be the best place for them to stay on Maui? I think someplace with a little more action (Kaanapali maybe?) They don't really party a lot but would like some shops or restaurants to go to at least a couple of times. I think a condo would be better since they could save on food this way. There will either be 4 or 5 of them going. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help. They don't necessarily need an ocean view since they all live on the beach in Newport Beach but it would be nice to be closer to one of the bigger beaches.

Yep. I figured even if the price went down, it probably wouldn't be by much and this way I can book my seat assignments while seats are still open. The peace of mind knowing I have excellent flights booked is worth it as well.

Also, if the price did go up, I'd be kicking myself.

Paula,
As far as accomodations for the girls, a condo is great. Our family rented one the last time we went. I'd say the Kaanapali, Lahaina area would be good. Just enough nightlife. If only 4 girls go, they could get away with a 1BR which would save money. Having the kitchen is great, even if you only use it for breakfast or lunch.

Sandy - Glad you got your tickets. Thanks also for the advice on the condo. Where did you stay last time? I have checked this forum for a couple of recommended places already. Even though they might not get their tickets yet, I am going to advise them that they should get a condo reserved soon. I am sure the better and cheaper ones book up quickly around Spring Break time.
