Is there anyplace in Arizona that is NOT as hot as Hades in early August?
Some relatives in northern Illinois decided on a lark to pack the kids into the van and drive to the Grand Canyon (south rim). We did an Arizona trip a few years ago, so they are asking our advice on what to see and do. Our trip, however, was in MARCH, so it was a good 50 degrees cooler for us than it will be for them. We were based in Flagstaff, which I'm thinking should be a bit cooler due to the altitude. Is there anywhere in the Sedona/Flagstaff/Grand Canyon general area that isn't dreadfully hot this time of year? Any streams to swim in? Caves or other cool places to explore?

If it was me, I'd base myself in Flagstaff. It will be upper 70s to 90 for the highs, and will be cooler and nicer at night (it can go into the 40s at night, even in August). Much better than Sedona or south rim of GC in August. THey could do an overnight or two at GC and then come back to the realtive coolness of Flagstaff.
They can go down towards Sedona to swim in Oak Creek at Slide Rock State park on 89A, then go back up where it is cool in Flagstaff.

I don't understand why there's this misperception that the S. Rim is incredibly hot in summer. It's at 7000 feet. If you look at the NPS website, the average high temp in July is 84, and in August is 82.
Certainly if you hike down into the canyon a ways it will get hotter than that, but the rim itself is not a furnace just because it's in Arizona.

Weasel, the sun is so strong and it is soooo dry at the South Rim in summer, that even if it is just in the low 90s (and that is what it has been the three times I've been there) it feels very very hot to me. The times we have gone in June, I could not drink enough, and we could not bring ourselves to do more than the rim tour on the bus that lets you out at the stops and overlooks. I am usually one to hike but I couldn't do any more walking after that rim tour in summer. It just is sapping and dehydrating (even though we each drank as much as we could, constantly) and it is plenty hot to me during the day when the sun is blazing, Night is a different matter...pleasant.

I think the coolest places in Arizona are in the White Mountain area, eastern Arizona. Pinetop, Showlow, Alpine, Greer are just some of the small towns...it can be really cool during the summer, at least at night.
