Is Las Vegas THAT much different on the weekends?

My wife and I are planning our first trip to Las Vegas - for 4 or 5 days in December. Friends have told us to go during the week, and avoid the weekends at all costs, because everything becomes so much more crowded and expensive then. Any truth to these remarks?

Yes.
Just dial the toll-free reservation line for any Las Vegas hotel and try to get a Saturday-night-only stay. Then ask for the price for staying on weekends and that for weekdays. It'll speak for itself.

If you live in a city through which Southwest Airlines flies, get a package with them, the deals are incredible. You can also save money by staying at a off-strip hotel - my favorite is the Palace Station and it has a shuttle every 15 minutes to the strip, so you don't even need to rent a car.
Vegas is crowded any time of year, Monday through Sunday, but it is still cheaper Sunday through Thursday.
You will have a BLAST!

First off-DO NOT GO DURING THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY, the place is an absolute madhouse. Yes, weekends are a bit more crowded and definelty the rooms are more expensive. As mentioned before, a good way to visit would be package that would include airfare and rental car. You want a car because there are great areas to drive to not far away, the dam, red rock canyon (i think that isthe name). Las Vegas has a number of web sites so dial them up and start shoping for your rooms. Have fune and Good Luck!

Generally speaking the weekends are a bit more crowded than during the week. However room rates are definitely more expensive on the weekend and many places discourage or even don't allow Saturday arrivals. Of course the most expensive time of the year is mid week for the Comdex show in 2 weeks.

You don't say when in December that you are considering. The first 3 weeks of December is the deadest time of the year. Many of the resorts offer free nights to their customers. However the week between Christmas and New Years is packed. We will be staying in Las Vegas Dec. 29 to Jan. 2 and attending the special New Years Eve party. This is by special invitation from the Flamingo Hilton and everything is on their nickle.

We just got back for a great week in Las Vegas at the Grand Hilton Vacations Club timeshare resort. It was a fabulous week.

While everyone advises against Christmas week because of the incredible crowds, I give a big thumbs-up to the week leading up to Christmas. (This year it starts on Sunday the 20th.) According to the resorts, this is the slowest week of the year. I went last year and stayed at the Mirage for $49/night. This year, Luxor, NY/NY, Mirage and others are still at the $49 rate up to Xmas day. (I checked on the *same* rooms for the following week, and they're $300/night.)

And while it's slow by Vegas standards, the crowds are reasonably manageable without being totally dead. We had a great time and are going again starting on the 19th. See ya there!
