There might be others that were not tagged by state.

But yes, these are not really tourist hot spots, esp in winter.

And the US board has been getting slower and slower. And the fact that the search function no longer works doesn't help.

When I first started viewing this site about 8 years ago, I would find several things posted each day that had my interest. Now, I rarely find one a week. I would say the activity is maybe 20% of what it was.

Fodors has only made a few changes since I began. I would say every one of them has irritated me and I'm sure turned a lot away. I don't see what good any of the changes were that have been made. Just my thought.

UT is quite the tourist hot spot, just not for the types of activities you enjoy. To each their own. People come from all over the world to visit Utah's Natl Parks and ski.

And - UT has some of the best skiing in the world, there are hundreds of native New Yorkers who live here full time because they caught on to a good thing. :-0

And yes, Fodor's has really slowed down everywhere. I don't know about others, but the sky high air fares and other escalating travel costs have severely cut into my travel plans.

I think I'll be doing a lot more camping in the future!

In case someone forgot, there is skiing in Montana. It might not be as good as Utah or Colorado, but may be cheaper.

My favorite method of arriving or departing Whitefish is on the Empire Builder. It is true that the schedule of the Empire Builder has suffered greatly in the past year due to the oil boom in South Dakota and eastern Montana.

Dayle--let me know where you camp--i can always some good recommendations if you are car camping (Nobody else in my family backpacks but they will car camp. I need to pick that up a bit--but they are going to have to help out. It is so.much.work. otherwise!)

I think a lot of the slow down here is due to:

The huge number of ads - many of them irritating constantly moving/changing ads that rally slow down the loading of the threads (I realize that the income from the ads supports the site - but without readers there will be no income either - the management can certainly limit advertising to ads that don't slow down site loading)

There have been numerous instances of the site being down for periods from several hours to a day or more - without any advance notice or explanation. This seems to have stopped - but there were times when I avoided the site for several days due to frustration with is it working or not - and I'm sure the same with others

I agree nytraveler, the ads are a big turn off.

Although since I've been on the forums since 1996, I have always noticed a significant drop off in activity during the holidays. People are busy with other things.

Shopping and decorating instead of posting - happy holidays to all!

Oh re the camping. I tend to go all over with my backpacking tent. Haven't done much camping in the last few years due to my very elderly pug, Yoda. I'm about ready to "upgrade" to something other than a tent and am looking for a used tent trailer or something.

StantonHyde, it's good to know you backpack. It seems so few in Utah do! I think because so many of our great local hikes can be done as a day hike.

Other than skiing I realize these places aren't as popular in winter.

However, plans are made well in advance and this is probably the time of year to plan for next summer.

I, too,like the idea of a tent trailer, Dayle. My body is a bit stiff after waking up in a tent, even with a good air mattress. But camping in the southwest is great - so many incredible places to pitch a tent. Peter and I were just talking about sleeping in the back of a rental jeep or a big SUV on our next trip. Sand Island on the San Juan River and Red Canyon near Bryce were both good spots. We've also enjoyed some nice spots near Comb Ridge.

sharondi--I have told my husband that the "most" I am willing to do (along the motorized camping continuum) is a tent trailer And that's only because it would be less work than hauling the giant family tent along!!!

Dayle--I know lots of people who backpack but trying to coordinate is hard. And now that we all have kids, it doesn't happen so much! I might see if my daughter will do an overnight back pack with me this summer in the Uintas. She will be 10 and she is tough--might be able to do something that involves a 3 -4 mile hike in and then back out. With card games and some other activities for camp!!

DH is a great day hiker/car camper. As long as there is a cool beer and a sun shower at the end of the day, he is happy.There are plenty of places I want to see along Comb Ridge/Butler Wash that are really more day hiking places vs. backpack. Some day.....

There are tons of threads about Yellowstone, the Tetons, the Utah parks . . . when folks are planning spring/summer trips. Not at Thanksgiving/Christmas. Everything is cyclical.

Now more folks are planning winter trip to NYC and Florida.

After the 1st of the year when folks are planning their summer vacations you'll see lots more posts about the National parks and such . . .

Meyer - I agree with you. This is the time of year you should start planning for visiting any of these places next year.
