Hi!
My fiance and I finally decided on the places to stay for our honeymoon next JUNE. Part of the time we are staying 3 nights at Gloria's Spouting Horn B&B on the South Shore of Kauai. Well, I was just looking at the brochure that was sent to us and getting ready to send the check for the deposit when I realized none of the rooms have A/C. Coming from Florida, I can not imagine not having A/C especially in June. But, since the B&B is ocean front and there are ceiling fans, will we be miserable w/o A/C?

We live part of the year in Kona Hawaii and own a home w/no a.c. there. June in Hawaii is a bit (10 degrees) hotter in summer than winter. Rarely does it get above 88 degrees. Kauai is typically a bit cooler than other islands. With an ocean front and ceiling fans you should be fine. The trick w/b to ask if you have cross ventalation from ocean side. If you do you will be comfortable. If not, expect for it to be warm from 3:00 - 5:30 p.m each day. Evenings are always at least 10 degrees cooler (high 60-low 70's). My guess is you will find it much more comfortable than Florida.

I've seen this question asked several times, and I'm always shocked at the answers. Having been to Hawaii twice, most recently last month, I can't imagine not having air conditioning in my hotel rooms. WE were on Kauai & Maui, and HAd the A/C running constantly. I'm from NYC, so i'm used to the 4 seasons.
I guess this question is all up to personal preference. Some people are very comfortable in warm weather without a/c, and some need the A/C on 24/7. Personally,I wouldn't stay in a hotel where I don't have the choice whether to turn the A/C on or off. When I'm on vacation, I want to feel comfortable, and if I start to feel warm, and don't have the option of A/C, my whole trip would be ruined.

It will be warm in Hawaii in June, but if you have a breeze you should be OK. Of course, it is very nice after being out at the beach or sightseeing to come home to your nice, cool room. But there is another consideration. Do you want to hear the sound of the water and the wind in the palm tress, or do you want to hear the air conditioning. Put another way, do you want to hear what is going on around you -- whether it be wonderful natural noises or traffic -- at all? A/C is a great way to shut out all ambient noise. Also, if you have to have the windows open for ventilation, will there be light streaming into your room all night? That would keep me awake! Think about it.

My husband and I booked a room with separate entrance which was attached to someone's house in Kailua on Oahu for four nights in December, Hawaii's winter. It had no air conditioning, doors and windows had to be locked up tight for security when we were not in the room, the sun beat on the room most of the day, there was a tiny window fan and a ceiling fan, and the property was surrounded by a tall fence. We had to leave after half our prepaid stay. My husband would wake up in the middle of the night not being able to breathe. Moral of the story is that I would definitely recommend air conditioning!

The answer is : it depends. I live on Oahu without AC. I moved here from south Florida where I could not have surrvived without AC. It is cooler here than Florida. However, the temperature is dependant on 1)location on the island (some place dry and hot, some place wet and steamy, moderate and breezy) 2) elevation (higher = cooler) 3) how close you are to the ocean (closer = more breeze) and 4) what you are use to 5) cross ventilation in the room. It will probably be warm in June.

I recommend checking the average temp. for the part of Kauai you are staying on, and also checking with the B&B and asking them about ventilation, ceiling fans, and etc. It is not at all uncommon in Hawaii to NOT have AC (compared to FL where everyone has it) because the climate is generally tolerable even without AC.

I hope this helps. I think a lot of how 'ok' you will be depends on what your personal tolerance is. It is safe to say that the room won't be 70 degrees - more like 80ish with a good breeze at night.

Hawaii is blessed with tradewinds, which is one of the things that makes this place great. Although having A/C is nice, it's not totally necessary. I'd say the only time of the year I ever wish I had air conditioning is in August & September. The other thing is, Kauai is not called The Garden Isle for nothing! It's lush and green because it is cooler there and gets more rainfall than the other islands.

Ispent the Christmas-New Year's holiday on Maui and used the A/C every day. It was above 80 F. each day and that's a bit warm for my indoor comfort level.

A/C is certainly needed, the trade winds did not exist for the two weeks we were in Hawaii last September. We stayed in Maui, Kauai, & Big Island and eagerly looked forward to the A/C each day.

I stayed at Gloria;s B & B twice with my husband. It is wonderful. You do not need a/c there. You can hear the roar of the water all the time and there is a breeze. There are windows and balconies everywhere. Trust me you will love. What room are you staying in?

We travel to Kauai's south shore where Gloria's is located each Feb/March. We have never needed air conditioning. However, in the same time frame, we have traveled to Mauai and have always needed air. I do not think you will need air at Gloria's or air would have been installed by now. Word gets out easily these days via sites such as this one. The breezes you should get at Gloria's would greatly diminish the need for air. In fact, we always need blankets on the bed at night, it gets so cool. I think you will find Kauai cooler than the rest of the HI islands. The west side of the island is the warmest. There is nowhere the humidity in Kauai that you experience in FL. Trust me; you should be okay. I just wonder if you are sure you want to stay at a B&B for your honeymoon - sharing quarters with others. Gloria's looks like a beautiful home, but there is a certain lack of privacy in a B&B. Food for thought!
