I am also posting this on the Lounge forum.
My husband has an appointment at the UVA hospital at 11 am. We would like to spent the previous night in an interesting small town within 60 miles of Charlottesville.
He has to have a MRI and checkup there twice a year for a rare liver condition, so each time we try to plan something fun for part of the trip. He loves history and interesting architecture, so we have gone to Staunton to see the beautiful Tiffany stained glass windows in the old Episcopal church there. We have been to Lexington and of course, Monticello. Any suggestions for other places to visit? We enjoy staying in a B&B somtimes.

You might explore accommodations in and around Barboursville, Virginia -- about 16 miles from Charlottesville. Montpelier, the restored home of James Madison, is quite interesting ( http://www.montpelier.org/ ), and Barboursville Vineyards is close by. There's an Inn and cottages at the Vineyard, and an excellent restaurant ( http://www.barboursvillewine.net/winery/ ).
