Intercontinental Buckhead-Atlanta-Comments Please

I just pricelined a deal here for $65/night for next weekend. Anyone have any comments or have you stayed here? When I bid, I anticipated getting the Grand Hyatt or JW Marriott.

Just from looking at their website and reading a few reviews I could find, I think I am quite happy to be here.

Also, maybe OWJ or LoveItaly or others, of course, could answer if there is a website for Brasserie Le Coze in Lenox.

It's our GWO (girls weekend out) and any suggestions for a Saturday for lunch, shopping and dinner is appreciated.

On Sunday, the 4 of us are headed to see "Menopause The Musical" so maybe someone could suggest a brunch place in the 14th Street Playhouse area.

Hi iceeu2, you will never guess what? OWJ told me a couple of days ago that Brasserie Le Coze in the Lenox Mall is going to close as Nordtroms (think it is Nordstroms-anyway one of the big stores) is going to take over their space.

Evidently Brasserie Le Coze will locate to another location but am not sure when. Am not sure when the will be closed down at Lenox either. I think it is sometime soon.

I went to Google and they don't seem to have their own website, just listed under various websites (address & phone # etc.). When I talk to OWJ this week I will get more details and repost. Right now, due to their moving into their new house she doesn't really have computer access.

I hope you get to Atlanta before Brasserie Le Coze's has to vacate thei spaced. I love that restaurant! Best wishes.

Can you imagine?? The nerve of them!!

Thanks LoveItaly for the info. Imagine the nerve!!

Good for OWJ moving into her new home. If you remember to ask her about the Intercontinental Buckhead, please do so!

I think we are going to do Roy's for dinner since I am having the real joneses for Hawaii!

Hi iceeu2, your welcome. I will try real hard to ask OWJ. The last 48 hours or so have been real traumatic for our family and family in Rome has serious health problems so daughter & SIL just flew there yesterda & I have my 14 yr. old grandson for 2 plus weeks with all the activities for the end of school this coming week plus graduation - but I will try real hard to remember. And will get more details about Brasserie Le Coze too. BTW, OWJ was very unhappy about their getting "shoved out of the Lenox" also. It is a shame. Talk to you later. Take care.

iceeu,

I have not stayed there but have attended business events there quite recently. Only about two blocks south of Lenox Mall. Near great restaurants. The hotel is very nice.

iceeu2- I think you really scored with that Priceline deal. It's supposed to be fantastic tho I haven't stayed myself.
If you're looking for a great place to eat dinner before the show, I just went to Pulcinella in midtown last week. The pasta was fantastic (the best i've had in Atl) and the atmosphere just perfect (in an old bungalow in midtown on Peachtree Walk). Address is 1123 Peachtree Walk and phone is 404-892-5760. I find the restaurants walking distance to the theater where you're going to be mediocre but that's just MHO! If you don't mind a 2 minute drive, Pulcinella is worth it! There are also some really cute shops in the Around Lenox shopping center, walking distance from your hotel. And maybe for brunch, you could try Murphy's in VA Highland. Will you have a car?

Yes, I will have a car, but by the time we get ready to leave on Sunday I'm not sure I want to leave Buckhead to VA Highlands to Midtown, do I? The play is at 2 pm.

Nother question, do we perhaps just want to take Marta from Lenox to the play and then go go home from there? Isn't there parking really inexpensively? We will be going I-75 North. Or, should I just bite the bullet and pay the atrocious parking fees around the theater area?

From further searching, I am really psyched about this hotel.

VA/HI is only about a mile or two from midtown so if you do decide to drive, it's worth your while. Just go early enough so you don't have to wait in line. I'll try to think of other places too. Depending on how much stuff you'll have (if it's a shopping trip, I'm assuming a lot!), you should probably just drive n' park. The MARTA is great, but it's a little bit of a walk to the theater on 14th Street, especially with stuff. I know there's a public parking lot across the street from Einstein's on Juniper and it's usually $5. It may be more on theater days but maybe someone else knows this. This way, you can pack up, eat, park, see the show and just hop back on 75 South (don't go north!) to the airport without lugging all of your stuff.

syd, iceeu2 lives in N GA (she's not flying out).

One option is to park in the Colony Square parking deck - or the lot that syd recommends. Both have reasonable parking. If it's a pretty, sunshiney day, it may be hard to find a place to eat around there without a wait - so many folks eating before spending the afternoon in Piedmont Park. I do like the Thai restaurant at Colony Square, but I like Thai almost anytime I can get it!

I'd eat somewhere around Lenox before driving toward the play. If the Ritz Buckhead has a Sunday buffet, you can't go wrong there. I meet clients there for weekday lunches often and have never been disappointed.

VaHi has some good options and isn't far away, but parking can be challenging. Murphy's brunch is wonderful. That would be a good option and you probably can find street parking on Virginia. Then you'd already be facing in the right direction toward the Park and 14th street!

Is Murphy's in VA Highlands area?

How about some more ideas in the Buckhead area so I can offer options to everyone. Also, has anyone done South City Kitchen (I think that's the name)?

If you hear one of the on-star reps has gone bonkers, it may be because we bugged them to death asking for directions!

Hi iceeu2, I just talked to OWJ and asked her your questions.

First of all when I told her what you got the Intercontinental for she said "WOW!". She said it is the newest hotel and you will love it.

Also she said to tell your that Brasserie Le Coze is still open and if your are going to be in Buckhead soon it should be there. She read about their eventually closing in a magazine called The Knife and Fork or something like that. It is NeimanMarcus that will eventually take over the restaurant's space.

OWJ doesn't really have her computer set up properly yet so she asked me to tell you "hello" for her. So "hello". They are enjoying their new house and will start interior painting real soon so she is busy and staying out of trouble.

Hope this info helps. Have fun in Buckead iceeu2!

Oh! That changes things!!! Sorry about that iceeu2.
South City Kitchen is also in midtown. You could try the Buckhead Diner and then continue down Piedmont until 14th Street.

Murphy's is in Virginia-Highlands, and is very good for lunch. I've been to South City Kitchen and it is also worth a trip.

Thanks guys, I checked out Murphy's website and I think that is definitely the type of place we would all like. I was thinking Virginia Highlands was farther out than it is.

Love, please tell OWJ hello the next time you speak with her. Tell her we miss her here on fodor's, but happy she is getting her new digs in tip top shape.

So much Atlanta, so little time!

That sounds like a plan, iceeu2. Do BdC on Sat night if possible! The IC is supposed to be absolutely gorgeous. A $65 rate is unbelievable. Be sure to do a trip report.

Head down to Virginia Highlands for Sunday brunch. There's not a better Sunday brunch in Atlanta IMHO. The drive should be just about 6 miles south. After you finish at Murphy's, head west for 1.6 miles according to Google maps. I'd definitely park in the Colony Square parking deck (corner of Peachtree and 14th). The Playhouse is across the street.

If you finish up brunch a bit early, why not put on comfortable shoes and take a brief stroll in Piedmont Park before the show? It is THE place to be on sunny days in Atlanta - and may be another show of its own!

You'll be right there to jump on 75N and home.

Have a great time and be sure to do a trip report.

And I'm a little bit lazy...just didn't want to type the words!

Brasserie Le Coze (and even got that wrong - I put BdC instead of BlC)

Intercontinental

For starrsville and others who care...The Intercontinental Buckhead was sensational.

Service was superior from arrival to departure. I know everyone is trained "to be nice", but honestly seemed genuinely sincere. Not stuffy but accommodating. Got the cutest little check-in guy. Treated us as if we were paying "the big price" instead of chintzing thru a priceline deal.

Also, had a cutey Bulgarian bellman who gave us the inside skinny on the happenings around us. The room we had that was facing Peachtree, we could see the crane where that crazy stayed for several days last month after he had killed his girlfriend in Florida. The other room looked out over the courtyard and beautful gardens. This young man was so cute as he was showing us the room...he said, "Have you seen the bathroom yet?" When we answered no...his reply was.."oh, wow, it's the best part"! And right he was..the bathroom was huge..all marble, huge tub and vanity were in the same area (vanity had a great magnifying lighted make-up mirror) with the toilet and full glass shower in a separate room. The bath area closes off from the sleeping area which is great for me to be able to move around and not wake up the person with me.

The bed was wonderful..plush pillow top mattress and great sheets..must have been a really high thread count. Robe and slippers in the room. That was good for us because we came back after dinner and did our microderm abrasion facials with our Inter-Continental robes on.

The tv in the room was a new flat screen and easy on the eyes.

Hotel is within a very easy walk to Lenox. Thankfully, I had the good sense to take the business card from the hotel because when we decided to end our shopping excursion, it was pouring down rain! Called the hotel, the conceriege put me in direct contact with the shuttle driver. He had said it would probably be 15 minutes before he could get to us and told us where to stand and watch for him so he didn't have to get in all of the traffic.........Willie was there within 5 minutes. More great service! The shuttle is complimentary within a 2 mile radius of the hotel.

Willie also shuttled us over to Roy's for dinner. Roy's food was so yummy. Chocolate souffle was gooey and rich and the perfect dessert for the girls. Service was great..every person employed there must have spoken to us. No one walked past your table without speaking and asking how things were. We had one minor problem (and it wasn't even a problem), but it was taken care of immediately. The waiter apologized profusely and wanted to know what "we wanted" for the error. Mentioned what we thought..and he was fine, fine, fine. One of the manager's came over at the end of the meal and apologized again....What had happened was...we had all ordered from the prix fixe menu which includes your appetizer, entree and dessert...we had also ordered sushi and ahi for the table to share. Well, they brought our entrees after the sushi and ahi, but had never brought the appetizers that came with the prix fixe meal. So, we just asked, why not just deduct the price of the additional appetizers and forget about the appetizers that come with the meal. It worked out well for everyone because we were already "too full" to fill up on more appetizers anyway...So, see, it wasn't really a problem at all and really worked to our benefit. When they brought the check, not only had they deducted the additional appetizers, but another $8 as well. Anyway, dinner was great.

We checked out on Sunday and since we were going to midtown to see "Menopause the Musical", we met another friend for Sunday brunch at Einstein's. Food was so good that we had lunch then went back to the same place for dessert after the play.

If any of you ladies are of "the age" and this play is anywhere near you, grab some girlfriends and go. It is hysterically funny. Never in my life have I laughed so hard that I cried and never have I laughed for so long. If you need a good "pick me up", by all means go to this play.

Thanks for the advice on places to go. Next time the girls get together I think we will definitely do Murphy's and the Virginia Highlands area. So much Atlanta...so little time!

Thanks for the trip report. The hotel sounds yummy. I was blown away by the lobby and public bathroom at the Intercontinental in Cannes, France so I can imagine what a room must be like! AND to get it for $65 via Priceline -wow! What a good idea to call for the shuttle. I used the complimentary car service from the Hyatt (kind of across the street) when I stayed intown. What a treat!

I'm glad you liked Einsteins. It's one of my favorite patio dining spots. My neighbor and her girlfriends went to see M the M too and loved it. Peachtree Battle is another great play if you are from or know Atlanta. What a hoot!

Come back soon. Syd has suggested the Park Tavern for a GTG sometime. Maybe "sometime" may actually happen one day!
