Speedway Indiana (the suburb where the track is) is kind of sketchy area, IMHO. You will probably only find Motel 6 kind of places.
How about an airport hotel--the airport is not too far away, and there are lots of good choices.
There may be shuttles to the track during race days, but otherwise you'll have to take a cab or rent a car.

I echo capxxx's comments about finding a hotel close to the track. The area is not that "nice" and the Speedway Motel" has been booked solid for years in advance.
Consider staying in downtown Indianapolis (there are lots of hotel choices). We've done this for several years in a row and had a blast. You have a choice of hotels in many different price ranges. Remember though it is "race weekend" so expect 3 night minimum stay requirements and higher prices than you might otherwise find at different times of the year. This is true for every hotel within driving distance of the Speedway.
There are lots of restaurants and bars where you can enjoy yourself when not at the track -it's really the place to be for all the action. Also, you'll be able to watch the Driver's Parade on Saturday (don't miss this event).
They have shuttle busses that run between downtown and the track (takes about 20 minutes). On race day getting to/from the track can be a nightmare if you are driving (imagine 500,000 fans all trying to leave at once). The shuttle busses take routes that are closed to regular traffic so the trip is rather quick. It sure beats driving to/from the track yourself.
FYI - driving to/from the track for "Carburation Day" and the support races on Friday and other non-race day events is fairly easy as there's no where near the crowds you find on race day. You can find easy parking right near the track. You can purchase parking at the Speedway lots but they are "package deals" so you'll be paying for parking on raceday even if you use the shuttle busses from downtown.
Take it from someone who has been ther, done that (several times) - you don't want to drive anywhere near the Speedway on race day. Use a shuttle bus or take a cab.

It's been a couple of years since I've gone but what I found before was try and book early and check the hotel families like Hilton and Marriott for new ones which will usually have a lower rate. Something else I saw if nothing new is available was lower rates on the eastside.
I agree with the other two posters about track locale however we did find parking close to the track on race day for the same price as several blocks away go early.
