Hotels and motels tend to fill up closer to race time but you shouldn't have a problem booking something good this early.
Your best bet is to check Expedia.com, Travelocity.com and Orbitz.com to get a feel for what's out there and choose what you're looking for. If you find a Days Inn that you like (for example) make sure you cross reference the Expedia price against the actual Days Inn website. Prices run the gamut from $60 for a Motel 6 near the airport to $500 a night downtown.
Try to stay downtown if you can. That's where all the action is pre-race day (restaurants, the Indy 500 parade, etc.) and you could take mass transit (a bus) to the track.
To clarify, not all hotels downtown cost $500 a night.
