An RV will probably cost you more than a hotel. An RV makes some sense when planning a 'road trip' where you move from place to place. Particularly when it includes places with few or no places to stay. Some National Parks for example.

I don't see much sense to flying into Miami, driving an RV to Clearwater and then parking it for your stay.

If I were you I would try to camp at state/county parks. They are beautiful, full of activities such as canoeing, bike riding, hiking, wildlife watching, etc.

Here is what I would plan. First stop would be Oscar Scherer SP, just south of Sarasota, FL. Beautiful park.

Then on to Turtle Beach Campground. It's a county run campground right on the beach on beautiful Siesta Key. It's a very short drive from Oscar Scherer SP.

Then Little Manatee River SP.

and finally, Park DeSoto in Clearwater area. Beautiful county run park, right on the beach.

Hope that helps in your planning. We love to camp and we camped many times at all of the above mentioned parks. For the most part we try to avoid commercially run camp/RV parks but there are exceptions.

Peace River Campground in Arcadia, FL. is a fun park.

and closer to Clearwater, Frog Creek Campground.

Have fun planning and have a wonderful trip!

It may be problematic for warm enough to go to the beach if that is the point of this trip.

Agree that I'm not sure why you are doing an RV versus hotels - since the latter would probably be cheaper and certainly give you more room.

And not sure why Clearwater - since in Jan it's very likely to be too cold for beach and swimming. Most families coming to FL head for Disney or the other amusement parks - esp in Jan.

Hotels in January will be at high season rates so cost really may be really high.

I wish I could help you with that but I can't. The only advice I can give you is about the park in Clearwater. They keep 10% of sites for walk ins only. Get there as early as possible on the day of your arrival as there will be many others doing the same thing. If it's weekend then you must try to arrive on Friday as early as possible. Saturday and Sunday arrival would be a waste of your time. During the week it's a crapshoot. It is a very popular campground. Jan, Feb, Mar and even Apr are the busiest times of the year because we get many from up north that want to escape winter in their part of the world and come down to Florida. Many reserve a month long or even seasonal(when allowed) stays at many of these places.

Try Peaceriver and Frog Creek campgrounds. I believe it's little easier to book Little Manatee River SP as well.

Another park to consider is Manatee Lake SP.

Good luck!
