Wow! (I need only the front porch, someone else can live inside!)

The up front cost is not the end of it, SF.

Can you imagine the maintenance/upkeep costs on a house built in 1780?

Initial Cost + Upkeep cost + constant tourists around your house (both walking & in horse and carriage) = no thank you.

It is very pretty, though.

NOT TO MENTION that everything has to be approved by the arbitrary Board of Architectural Review.

But it IS a beautiful place.

The reason Charleston is, like Nantucket, is a beautiful place is our "arbitrary" review boards. Charleston led the way, we followed.

Acks, the reason I said that is they are arbitrary in their decisions. They'll approve something, then disapprove what they approved. It's interesting.

Lovely house - but IMHO way too much work. In my area what you would get for that is a condo about half the size (4/5 bedrooms) in a pre-war (luxury) building - perhaps with a nice terrace if you take your time and look carefully.

Well, if I had the 8 million to buy the house, I expect I would be able to maintain it.....and if both of those were true, then I would buy it in a heartbeat! However, if my lottery winnings aren't quite as big, then I will just settle for this little castle on nearby Sullivan's Island!

Sue woo, here, too. What passed last year won't this year and vice versa. It is an elected commission.

You know the price has dropped from $59 million last year to $49 million this year, so I am holding out for further price reductions. I don't think it is worth a penny more than $39 million.

It is actually an amazing property, 68 acres surrounded by water on three sides. None of the houses is over-the-top luxurious, but there are several of them, enough for you and you children and your grandchildren and all their friends.

SD & SIL are getting ready to move to Charleston, but this is a bit out of their price range
