Go for it!. It has been a long time dream to see NYC at Christmas, so this year we did it. Three nights in the city. Here's how it went..
Did the planning early, booking hotel, shows and airfare several months ago. We stayed at Holiday Inn Express at 45th and 5th. Nice safe, clean hotel, nothing fancy, not what I would choose if $$ was not an issue. But a great location, and a (minimal)buffet breakfast to tide you over. And the people there were friendly.
Arrived Sunday afternoon, room not ready, so walked a block east on 45th to Eamonns pub, had a snack and couple of drinks, got into the NYC feel. Checked in, walked to Rockefeller Center. Did Top of the Rock/ wonderful views and a sprinkling of snow! Took it all in, took lots of pictures, then had dinner at Sea Grill overlooking the skating rink. Food, pretty good, setting not to be believed. Ice cleared, a couple skating on their own. Guy got down on one knee, girl had a meltdown, then said YES, YES, YES. What a New York moment! Then walked over to Radio City for the Rockette show. Have seen it in Ft. Lauderdale, but no comparison to the show in Radio City.
Monday was a busy day. Subway to World Trade Center, Ladder company 10. Didn't have the visceral impact on me that I thought it would. Felt the sadness more just walking on the streets. Then to the ferry to Liberty Island (walked around only) and then to Ellis Island. I have been there before; DH first time. Made sure we saw the Great Hall and the Memories from Home exhibit (not sure of the name, but you will know what I mean), also found Great-grandmas name and found her place on the wall outside. Freezing cold, blustry wind, were anxious to get back to Manhattan.
Dinner at John's Pizzeria (good, not worth 1hour wait), then spent a couple of hours at Don't Tell Mama, bar and cabaret. Great piano man, very cozy happy place.
Tuesday was shopping/mostly window shopping. Started with breakfast at Norma's at Parker Meridien. Good, overpriced, seemed cold ambience-wise to me. DH had eggs Florentine which he liked very much, I had some brioche/suzette stuff, which was only fair.
Walked to the Park, down Fifth, window shopped, Drug DH into Saks. What a crowded exciting place. Back to the hotel for a nap.
Then walked to our dinner reservation. We were early for Le Madeline, so had a drink at Daltons (9th Ave). Nice bartender, nice drinking buddies. Then dinner at Le Madeline; what a lovely surrounding in the Garden room, nice meal. Very comfortable. Walked to Jersey Boys. WOW, what great music. As it was an early show, we had time to walk back to Broadway and had a drink at Marquis Marriott View Lounge.
Last day: walked up to MOMA, did a quick tour, saw all we wanted to see. What a crowd!
Car to LaGuardia in snow flurries, what could be a better sendoff. Home with no problems. Will remember it for a long time!
Thanks to all of you, esp. NeoPatrick for your info.

Wow, what a dreamy trip, indeed! Thanks for posting, I very much enjoyed reading about it.
You're so welcome. As much as I HATE cold weather, about this time of year I always start thinking "I wish I were in NYC about now". I love it anytime, but it really is sort of magical at Christmas.
