While unlicensed vacation rentals are a problem in Kailua, I think this attitude is ridiculous. It's somewhat ironic in that I would bet that the loudest complainers are mainland transplants that first came here themselves as tourists.

None of the people I know who have lived in Kailua their entire lives shares this sentiment.

Hawaii has let the 'ohana' thing go too far. Laws need to be enforced to protect zoning. I don't want someone to buy the house next to mine in a single family zoned neighborhood and start a short term vacation rental *commercial* venture in it -- no permit, no revenue to the government, and disrupting the neighborhood.

I own a condo on Maui in a complex zoned for short term vacation rentals. I have a permit. I pay triple the homeowner rate in RE taxes. I collect 13.42% tax from my guests for the government.

Apply the existing laws. Fine and shut down these commercial enterprises in family neighborhoods.

I agree (although I don't know the situation and it is probably one sided if your read the article) that a neighbor hood that allows tourist, short term rentals can be frustrating to the homeowners who live there year round.

We had a neighbor next door who did that every summer for a couple of months and it was hit or miss depending on how nice the tourist/tenants were.

One week we had an entire high school soccer team staying in the house (a very small 3 bed/2 bath bungalow type home) with only two adults to supervise. These girls were up all night, goofing around in the front yard, back yard, in the streets, screaming, laughing, at the top of their lungs. It was the most annoying week - I complained to the lady who rented it to them and she wasn't very keen on doing anything to change the problem. I swore if something like that happened again I call the police.

The point is the neighborhood is NOT zoned for short term rentals. Anyone doing business there should be fined and shut down.

Anyone buying into the complex where we own knows going in that it is zoned for guest rentals. Our complex has 'quiet hours' from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. and most guests (and full time residents) pay attention. A guest who does not is in violation of his contract and can be *ejected*. (Good luck trying to find a place to stay on Maui at midnight in High Season. And I have seen it happen!)
