We are getting ready for our New York City trip in May, I have decided to surprise our grandaughter(11yr) with a limo ride. I understand this would not be the best way to tour NYC, but living in Texas--she has on her list of wants--room service and limo ride. Ya have helped so much with our dining around the Omni Berkshire hotel and I appreciate your imput. Seeing the tall buildings from a limo may not be that exciting, but I was thinking of maybe crossing Brooklyn Bridge or seeing areas that may not be that easy for novices at big cities to get to. Any imput would be appreciated.

Um - you can;t see tall buildings from a limo - all you can see is street level. You can see a little of the buildings on foot (but not much since you can't get far enough away)- but to really appreciate the skyline you need to view it either from above (Top of the Rock) or a distance (take the Staten Island ferry after dark for a great view of the lit up skyline).
Not sure where you're landing but there is often a great view of the skyline coming n from either LGA or EWR.
Reliable car services are Carmel or Dial 7. but if you want a real limo rather than a regular sedan you have to book that and it won't be inexpensive. check for their hourly rate - and know where you want to go - since the driver won;t (they know only airports and Manhattan).
If you want a real tour by limousine - with a driver/guide - they do a search here to see if anyone has recos.
I agree that a limo tour in the middle of your visit would not provide great views of the city, just of street level, and even then through tinted windows. You would have better views of those hard-to-reach areas from a city bus.
However, a limo from the airport to your hotel would provide a special beginning to your trip, a comfortable ride, and give your granddaughter her limo experience.
Sample from Carmel for a limo are LGA $113, JFK $144, EWR $132. Each of these rates is about $100 more than the rate for a regular sedan.
Strusserslimousineservice.com is one limo co. with nice cars, dependable service and will do tours. I wonder if it wouldn't make sense to do this on arrival (depending on what time you're arriving) as ellenem suggests. Have them pick you up at the airport and do a tour (including perhaps a ride in over one of the bridges) before dropping you at the hotel.
For a stretch limo I wouldn't use the more basic Carmel or Dial 7. Their specialty is cheap and quick where you phone them on arrival and they tell you where to meet the driver so you avoid parking fees and wait time. For a stretch limo with meet and greet service (where they come into the airport and wait with a sign with your name on it) Strussers is a better option imo.
