Ideas needed for October Road trip

Hubby and I have 12 days to do a road trip!!! Leaving out of north Texas, wanting to go northeast. Never been further north than Nashville. We are not fancy people, bars, distilleries or vineyards are not us. We are just wanting to see some of God's beauty in other parts of the US. We are leaving 10/4/14. Any and all suggestions appreciated. We don't have to hit the tourist traps, would like to get in as many states as possible. Thanks in advance

How about heading up through the Smoky Mountains and on up to DC/Virgina/Pennsylvania, etc? You could probably hit quite a few states, and it should be really pretty this time of year.

What are you interested in? Have you been watching The Roosevelts on PBS? Here's a route with lots of driving but interesting and beautiful things to see -

North TX to Franklin, TN - one of the prettiest towns in the south
Day 2 - on to Mammoth Cave NP for a tour and spend the night in Bleckley WV
Day 3 - tour a coal mine in Bleckley -
http://www.beckley.org/exhibition_co...ound_tour.html
and on to western PA
Day 4 - tour Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob -
http://www.fallingwater.org/
http://kentuckknob.com/
spend the night in the area
Day 5 - on to Lancaster or Bird in Hand, PA area and tour Amish area
spend the night in the area
Day 6 - on to the Hyde Park area for 2 nights
tour the FDR homes and enjoy the countryside
Day 8 - head south to Washington DC and tour for 1 or 2 days
Day 9 - head toward Chincoteague Island, VA
Day 10 - head toward Appomattox VA and enjoy the small towns of VA and Civil War sites
Day 11 - head for Asheville NC
Day 12 - head south toward Atlanta and I 20 to head west on 20 to Texas - stop at Tallulah Gorge State Park
If you didn't do some of the above, there's time for the following and take a non-20 route -
- visit the Little White House at Warm Springs, GA and spend the night at Callaway Gardens
- dip down to the Gulf of Mexico and spend the night at Rosemary Beach or another 30a town and walk the beach
- head home across MS and LA
that's at least 12 states in 12 days
The total for all of that is 4000 miles and 65 hours
The first and last sections are long stretches of driving, but every other segment is 5 hours or less.

Wow! Starrs, that is a great trip.

It isn't the trip I would take, but it is a great trip for people who haven't expressed strong interests.

It gets even better if they are able to avoid interstates in the core Middle Atlantic states.

Nice work! And even Tallulah Gorge to boot!

Based on your post, I included some things that I have already seen and some things I want to see. It's a manageable (but flexible) road trip with not too much driving each day.

I have no idea what your last sentence means and expect I'm on opposite ends of the political spectrum, but there's a lot to see of the great USA...now and in the future. Have a good trip.

You might have problems with lodging, it is peak season for beautiful fall trees. We are taking a road trip the first week of October and had trouble getting the reservations we wanted for W Virginia.

Some of us think Texas has already "gone that way". Do you have a Romney or "W" sticker on your car? I do see them from time to time even in Oregon.
We have a rather open northern border but we have no problems with the Canadians as long as they spend money in the US.
If you wanted to go farther north and east, park your vehicle at an Amtrak station with free parking and take the train to Washington DC. Spend a night in DC and then take the 8:10AM Vermonter all the way to Montpelier VT (11.5 hours). Spend a night in Montpelier and then rent a car to see the real Northeast. VT,NH, MA, ME,RI, CT. If you have an extra day after returning the car to Montpelier, take the Vermonter to New York City and see the 9/11 Memorial. You can also get off the train in New Jersey and take the next NE Corridor train to Philadelphia PA. Take the next train to Wilmington DE. That station is named for our VP Joe Biden.
Take the next train to Baltimore. spend a night in Baltimore and see the Inner Harbor and maybe Camden Yards.
I'm so glad that it was the O's that shut the Yankees out of the playoffs.
You should be able to do this trip in 12 days and get back to your little slice of heaven (Texas).
