Ideas for New Orleans trip

My husband and I will be in new Orleans with a 4 month old baby for several days. Any ideas of what we could do in the day time? We have been before so going on the plantation tours is not an option. She is a good baby but don't want to be limited in what we do as a result.

Well there are obviously many things you can;t do with a 4 month old - including jazz clubs and hanging out in bars and clubs. Also you need to consider the need to keep the baby out of the sun and avoid too much heat and humidity since at that age they can dehydrate very easily. And a good sturdy stroller is absolutely necessary.

Sorry - but with a tiny infant you will need to slow down and do things that fit her feeding/nap schedule. There is a lot to explore in the French Quarter - or take a trip to the Garden District. There is also a zoo but I think she is probably too young.

Frankly, this is not a trip I would choose with such a little one.

Twenty-five years ago, I moved to Bangkok with my baby when he was 3 months old. Before the age of 1, we had traveled with him thoroughout Thailand and taken him to Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. This was before the day of changing tables in bathrooms and nursing in public.

Thus, for me, I would consider traveling with a 4-month old to New Orleans to be a piece of cake. The great thing about 4-month-old babies is that all they do is sleep, eat and poop. The baby can sleep in a stroller; the baby will just be consuming milk and maybe a little solid food at this time, so feeding him/her will be easy; and all the bathrooms should be set up for the sanitary changing of diapers.

Go and have a great time. Take the baby on tours such as the St. Louis Cemetery #1 and the Garden District. Go to the National World War II Museum; visit some of the excellent Louisiana State Museums in NOLA like the Presbytere; and see the animals at the zoo. There are plenty of baby-friendly restaurants with good food in New Orleans. Two that I enjoyed on our recent visit which would be fine with a baby were Mother's and Deanies--good food without being pretentious.

Have a great time and enjoy travelling BEFORE the baby learns to walk. That's when it gets more challenging.

I really enjoyed a trip on one of the paddlewheelers on the Mississippi River while my husband was at a meeting.

Thanks so much Longhorne55 for your uplifting comments. First let me explain. We are grandparents babysitting while our daughter/husband are working, one at a conference in new Orleans. We are meeting the family there. Henceforth the questions I had. We are grandparents babysitting.

At 4 months old she has been to Maine, Denver Colorado, Maryland, and almost a trip to France at her young age. Her parents love traveling. I agree 4 months is easier for us grandparents then walking. Thanks for the suggestions.

There's also an aquarium and an insectarium in NOLA.

Baby too young to enjoy these but if you need some indoor time they are at least child and stroller friendly.

Sassy_cat yes I saw that thanks. They are all close to where we are staying. We are at the Sheraton on Canal Street. Looks like the location is wonderful for the Mississippi Ferry, and other activities close by. She also loves the swimming pool, so we can do that one day for a few hours. We are looking forward to spending time with our grandchild.

I would suggest the WW2 museum also since it would be indoors and stroller friendly. Street cars might be fun as well to the Garden District

We have returned and all went well. She is such an angel and easy to go here and there. We took the street car to City park and spent a day. The Street car was a challenge for us--must fold stroller to get on. We managed to "figure" it out. City park was awesome and a wonderful day. Art Museum Botanical Gardens a walk around the Ground for Sculpture--Story Book Land. A wonderful place for families.

One day a walk through the French Markets then off to the pool. Sat and had lunch, and of course several trips to Café Du Monde.

We went for breakfast every a.m. to HucksFinn. A cute little new Orleans type place. then off to the Natchez steamship ride one day. She loved that and slept through most of it--in the late p.m we went to the Pool. All and all a nice time spent with family. Thanks for suggestions.
