Ideas for Christmas Day in New York City - Manhattan ???
We will be at a family thing in NYC for christmas. 7 of us staying at hotels. (hopefully one hotel...) what are some ideas for us all to do on actual christmas day, when much will be closed???
any help much appreciated.

Radio City X has show, Chinese Food, Movie, SI Ferry, Church, Any of the jewish museums in town, tour of the lower east side, Central Park, Mme Tussaud's, Empire state building, Top of the Rock, etc etc etc.

If the weather is decent - last year we had about 25" of snow, but that is rare so early in the winter - you can do Central Park, which also has a skating rink - which is a bargain. The truly expensive one is at Rock Center - but that is more for the experience and the sit - since it's usually so crowded that actually skating much is a problem.
Second the Staten Island ferry - good view of the Statue on the way over and a great one of the city skyline on the way back.
Also walk up Fifth Ave to see all of the incredible windows: start at Lord & Taylor and head north up fifth, seeing Rock Cener, stop at St Pats; and at 57th turn east.
Check out Top of the Rock - it too may be open that day - but do it only if the weather is good.
As for dinner, many restaurants are closed and many that are open serve a traditional meal at set settings (every 2 hours). If you wan that - versus the alternate Chinese or ? - do make reservations far in advance. Opentable.com will have a list of many of those that are open - with prices and menus can be found on the websites.

Wow. Some great ideas. With lucky weather I can envision a really busty day! (In a good way)

There are a few areas with beuatiful residential architecture including the West Village and the East 80's near Central Park.
If the weather is bad, another favorite NY activity on Christmas Day is to see an early movie.

Newyorkology.com has a list of things that were open last year that will be helpful. You'll be surprised how much is open including some theater. Playbill.com will have a list of shows with performances if you're interested.

We have skated in Bryant Park the past 2 Christmas days. It's crowded, but with the music and decorations, it has lots of holiday spirit. The line usually is on the long side, but it moves quickly. Entrance is free. There's a fee for skate rentals and lockers. There's also a Christmas market there with various stalls, many of which are open on Christmas day.
