It makes sense. I'm sure a lot of tourists either couldn't get here or cancelled. Why not help out and get the credit for it - and possibly a good review?
Some hotel were also canceling out of town guests to give rooms to homeless locals (of course, notifying them in advance).
We have one employee whose home was washed away and the company is putting them - her, DH and 1 year old - up in a Hyatt for a month until they can find another place.
When I was flying to Houston, arund the time Katrina hit, there was a busload of folks bussed in from the immediate area. They stayed in the hotel I was in. Good stuff.
