My husband and I are spending our 20th anniversary in California in mid May. We plan to spend 2 nights in San Francisco then rent a car and head to the wine country. We have heard such great things about the coastal drive and would love to see the coast but don' t want to spend to much time driving because of our limited time. We have an additional 4 nights planed after we leave San Francisco and thought we might spend the first night on our way to wine country on the coast but not sure if it is worth the drive or if we should spend our 4 nights in wine country. We have heard Mendocino is nice but seems to be a long drive. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

There are wineries in the north coast and central coast, so you can visit the coast and "wine country" simmultaneously. If you want to visit the Napa and Sonoma areas, then Mendocino or the Sonoma county coast would make a nice compliment.

As you can see, we basically have wine everywhere
I recently did a wine tasting trip- we stayed in Santa Rosa and visited wineries in the surrounding area. I much preferred that to wine tasting in Napa -
As november-moon pointed out, wine country is everywhere in California. You can head up the coast north or south and still take in vineyards and wineries.
Love Napa/Sonoma - but you could also drive down the Coast/hiway 1 - to and through incredibly scenic Big Sur - and stay overnight in Cambria - or at one of the Winery B & B's along rouote 46 - which heads into the highly acclaimed Paso Robles wine area.
