Unlike many cities, there's really no easy way to get from any of the airports into Manhattan. The cheapest way is a combination of bus and subway which will cost you a grand $1.50. The fastest is probably a taxi which realistically is closer to $40. In between are any number of bus and shuttle services. Here's a good website that gives you the options: http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/aviframe.HTM

Cheapest is bus/subway. Fastest is taxi. A taxi will run you some $. You have to add on tolls for Midtown Tunnel (unless the driver takes the 59th St. Bridge).
I would recommend the subway. I met a couple from Illinois who took it from LGA to NYC. They had no problem at all.

Don't be ridiculous. The subway is not at the airport; you'll have to do alot of fooling around with a bus to get to the subway and then it's a long ride with lots of stops. Assuming you'll have luggage it's really not a viable option unless you have alot of patience and time to kill. Take a cab, like I said before, or maybe the Super Shuttle van depending on the price.
By the way, it's Manhattan, with an 'a'.

Fstest way is a taxi. Cost will be somewhere around $25, tip and toll included. If the taxi driver takes the free bridge cost will be $3.50 less. Trip, under ideal traffic conditions will be around 30 minutes. Cheapest way is the bus/subway combination and cost is $1.50. Total time of trip to Times Square will be close to one hour.

If there is just one person, and you can transport your luggage yourself for 1/2 a mile or less, then the cheapest fairly fast way is to take the bus which now has some name like "Trans-edge" (this completely wrong, someone help). It is under $13 I think, as the JFK bus is $13. Get out at the Port Authority Building, and you can walk to Times Square. It should be under 1/2 mile to your hotel.
The subway thing--it is quite bad. I would think it would be 3 hours door to door, as it's one or more weird local buses plus a subway, plus climbing stairs in the subway, plus walking to your hotel from the subway.
More than one person, definitely take a taxi, as it is $30-$40 with tolls and tip. If you come into JFK, the Trans-Whatsit bus is still a decent savings for 2 people, but not for LGA.
Also check out a car service, they are usually a little cheaper from LGA to NYC than a taxi. 212-777-7777 and 212-666-6666, among others.

A cab is definitely the most convenient. Cabs operate on meters and they hand out leaflets at the taxi stand at LGA that tell you how much it should cost, so you won't get ripped off. But public transportation from LGA is not that big of a deal either...if you're on a tight money budget and flexible with time. There is a bus that stops at the airport and you would want to head towards Astoria Blvd. It's one bus that stops in front of the N train. The bus driver will tell you where that is...and you can't miss it anyway since it's above ground. The N train takes about 20-25 minutes to get to Times Square.

I just took a cab to and from our hotel at the south end of Central Park to/from LGA over the Thanksgiving weekend (including one mid-workday trip).
Both trips were $25 total, both took about 25 minutes and involved a relative minimum of waiting in traffic.
