My friend and I are planning a visit to Savannah and Charleston in March 2009. We will have 7 days. I am leaning towards spending more time in Savannah than Charleston, but I would like opinions.

How should we spend our days? 5 days Savannah and 3 days Charleston?

I would reverse it - more time in Charleston.

When in March 2009? Be careful - Savannah has one of the biggest, loudest, drunkenest St. Patrick's Day celebration in the country. Plan around that - if that is yur thing, be aware that hotels are more expensive, booked way ahead, and may have minimum stays during that time period. My suggestion would be tyo avoid Savannah on days surrounding 3/17.

Laurie - Agree with Gail, definitely more time in Charleston.

We found much more to see in the city itself and also in the surrounding area of Charleston.

I love them both but I'd do 5 days Charleston, 3 days Savannah or half and half.

I would also spend more time in Charleston than Savannah. 2 days would probably be plenty for me.

Another vote for more time in Charleston. I think 2 days is enough to see Savannah. That would give you time to explore Charleston's historic district, plantations, do some shopping and perhaps even visit a nearby beach (although I'm not sure of the temps. in March).

We will plan 4 days in Charleston and 3 days in Savannah, with a day to visit Tybee Island.

I agree with the less time in Savannah. It's smaller and there is less to see. Charleston has more to see because the historical area is larger--- even in the outlying areas -- Angel Oak near Kiawah, the plantations, Ft. Sumter, and some interesting museums. They both are wonderful cities, have great restaurants, interesting walks, and welcoming natives.

This is all great for me too. We plan to go to Charleston and Savannah the second week of April (we will be staying on Seabrook Island with my aunt and uncle).

We were looking at the map last night and I couldn't see a route between the two that would take us along the shore. It looks like we will have to go inland and pick up an interstate. Is there a back way to get between them?

Even the "back way" won't take you along the water. Take 17 out of Savannah to Bluffton to Beaufort then up something else and join 17 again into Charleston. You will cross some inlets, the Broad River in Beaufort, but for the most part there are few views, and it's a 2 lane road--a pain to drive, and somewhat dangerous IMHO, as impatient people try to pass to get around the slowpokes in areas they really shouldn't be passing.

I say more time in Charleston and less in Savannah. I agree with everyone who said-2 days in Savannah and 5 in Charleston.

Charleston is so beautiful with it's cobblestone streets, art galleries, gardens/historical homes, roof top pool/bars, and AMAZING food!

Since you seem to be starting in Savannah, what about 2 there and a stop in Kiawah for a night or two, then finish in Charleston....? Its worth it and is a totally different feel. some relaxation in between city touring....

We ended up booking 5 nights in Charleston, Mills House Hotel( Priceline $100/night).

We are staying in Savannah for 4 nights at this apartment.

Hi Laurie,

A great inexpensive place in Charleston to eat is Jestine's Kitchen. Real southern home cooking. They have amazing fried chicken and don't forget to get a slice of the coconut cake/pie for dessert!

Having now been to both, I will say that I was disappointed in Savannah but I loved Charleston. I would go back to Charleston in a heartbeat but probably will not return to Savannah. I know there are people that love Savannah but for me I thought it was just OK.
