HI - is the fog so miserable all day at end of July in San Fransisco ?We are flying in from London and planning to stay 2 or 3 nights .. if its foggy and cold all day I'm wondering whether to make our stay 2 nights instead !

It can be quite cold in San Francisco during July and foggy, especially in the mornings, but it can also be blazing hot in the afternoon when the sun comes out. There's no way I'd cut a trip short just because of that.

Our weather is so unpredictable, I wouldn't change the number of days based on supposition as to what it will be like.

Oops posted before I was finished. The weather could be fabulous or it could be foggy. But it usually isn't foggy all day long and it really won't severely affect anything you might want to do in San Francisco. San Francisco after all is not a beach town, and activities here are not dependent on it being sunny and hot. If it is foggy it usually only last for the morning so plan outside activities for the afternoon.

It also depends on what you want to do. Great food, museums and things to see. Its a very interesting city. The fog is not rain after all (we should be so lucky as to have rain in July!).. What else are you going to do on this trip?

I was there in July once and it was definitely cool and overcast. I guess foggy. It didn't bother me much as I like cool weather, but I did have a fleece jacket. Just one of those cheap lightweight ones that are easy to pack. It wasn't raining, as I recall.

Depends, if you must have sun, then I guess not. Otherwise, just be sure to have a jacket and long pants. Maybe you are sick of fog from London?

Can't answer in a vacuum - what does the rest of your trip look like? But in general, no, I wouldn't cut SF short because part of each day might be foggy. Just dress warmly.

One goes to San Francisco for reasons independent of the weather. Even when foggy and a bit cool, it's a wonderful town to explore. It's a walking city, so super-hot is actually a good thing. Nice weather for sight-seeing is never a long time away. And remember the Three Rules of Dressing for California: Layers, layers, LAYERS.

Welcome to the land of the micro-climate. I've told of years past when we've had fierce Santa Ana conditions and it's been 104F at my house but a less-broiling 88F at the beach-- four miles away. Driving from my office in Santa Monica to my home in Long Beach usually involves watching the temperature jump up and down 5-10 degrees, usually ending up 5 degrees hotter in LB than it was in SM.

I've always enjoyed spending any time in the City; the seven days we spent there on our actual honeymoon (a year after we got married) flew by. Our last trip was five nights (I think), and that was barely enough time as far as we were concerned. Don't worry about the weather, just worry that you'll run out of time in that fantastic town!

Impossible to predict the weather! That said, I've never been there when it was fogged in all day in all parts of the city.

Native Californians know to always carry a sweater. If you move a mile in San Francisco, you can easily see a 20 degree change in temperature.
