How long should I spend in South Beach and the Keys in July?

We are an early 30's couple and we are leaving for this trip in less than three weeks, so I'm having to plan FAST. (Usually I spend months planning vacations.)
Anyway, we like to stay active and busy on vacation, we can only relax for so long and then we get bored.

I was thinking we would spend 2 nights in South Beach and then divide the next 5 nights between the keys. The only thing I have booked so far is 1 night camping at Bahia Honda (we will probably only camp 1 other night, hotels the rest of the time.)

I'm just starting to wonder if we'll be bored with 5 days, so I'm wondering if we should stay somewhere different for a night.
Biscayne national park, or maybe drive the Everglades expressway (but it will be July weather!)

I'm trying to plan fast and I've read so much info I think I have overload!

BTW, just for comparison, we loved Hawaii but we only spent one full day lying on the beach. Usually we were hiking snorkeling, etc.

Last March I spent 2 nights in South Beach and 1 night in Islamadora with friends and 3 in Key West. Mostly we just wanted to enjoy the beautiful weather and hung out at the beaches, the pool, the shops and bars/restaurants. I used the destination section here in Fodors and drilled down to Key West then followed their suggestions. We went to a couple of the recommended beaches and took the snorkling trip recommended there, but didn't enjoy it --the seas were rough and the boat's captain and mate were rather unfriendly. Spent a couple of hours at Bahia Honda; but was anxious to get back on the road to get to South Beach. I thought the beaches were pretty rocky--bring good water shoes. I enjoyed Key West, but 3 days was enough for me.

Our one day in Key West was a bit rushed, but for us (who also are not exactly the hang out at the beach type) two days there would be perfect too - I would have enjoyed more time to see the rest of the keys and take a boat out to the Dry Tortugas - that said...

South Beach, you can really see all that there is to be seen in one day and one night (restaurant, club, etc.) I could see spending many nights there (great food and a cool atmosphere at night) but would probably look to spend time in Miami proper during the third day and beyond.

If you like a low-key, local dive style bar (instead of the more tourist oriented stuff) check out the Green Parrot in Key West - very unique, and we were the only non-locals in there (and were not made to feel out of place at all.)

We spent 2 nights in key largo and 5 nights in key west several years ago. Click on my name for my report.

In Key Largo (which off the water, we did not like very much) we spent one day a John Pennecamp (SP) swimming and taking a snorkle trip which was fun. 2nd day was spent in the Everglade. We love that and would do it again in a minute.

In key west we did the mallory square thing several nights. Rented a small boat to take a tour around the bay and suck. Walked Duvall. Went to the butterfly convercency. Spent a day on the water fishing. Spent a 1/2 day a ft Zach Taylor. Swimming Sunning etc. Spent 1 after noon at Bahia Honda state park on the way up to key largo.

You really can't run out of things to do in the keys. Have fun
