I am traveling to LA and SF in February with some family. Two of us are teachers, so we are going during the school vacation week. I am wondering when the latest I should book is...would after Christmas be too late?
We are thinking about using Hotwire or Priceline (I have used Hotwire before, but not PL.) I would like to wait until after Christmas to book (I want to surprise my husband for X-Mas with a plane ticket to join us), but I am concerned that booking hotels at the end of Dec. would be too late for mid-Feb., especially since it is a vacation week.
Thoughts or opinions?? Thanks!
How far in advance to book LA and SF hotels for Feb. trip? (Hotwire/Priceline)

If you are planning on going over the Presidents' Day weekend, it is best to book early. It's like finding a decent place to eat on Valentine's Day -- try to book too late and you can only get McDonalds.
Yep, the first couple of days we'll be there will be President's Day weekend (we'll most likely be in LA then, then traveling to SF.)
Anyone else?
February is not considered tourist season and I think only New England schools are on vacation that week. But with Valentine's Day and President's day on the same weekend, San Francisco will be pricey.
Best way to go is probably into L.A. for that weekend, though high-end hotels will be pricey and full. Rent a car up to SF and fly home from there at the end of the week.
Hotels don't offer discounted rooms unless they expect plenty of vacancies. And using Hotwire and Priceline you pay whether you stay or not. So booking early is a gamble, and probably not necessary since the mere fact that they're discounting the rooms probably means they'll have vacancies right up until February.
