Houston Weekend Planning Help Needed, please

We're coming to Houston in March for a conference and noticed that the Livestock Show and Rodeo is being held during the time we'll be there! I've always stayed in the city before (usually at the Houstonian because I like their spa) but am considering coming a few days before to enjoy perhaps a different experience this time.

I'd love a recommendation from you Fodorites on small hotels or bed and breakfasts stays where horseback riding is available. I'm willing to drive within a few hours of Houston. The Inn at Dos Brisas is NOT in my budget but it sure looks incredible!

I've seen Blisswood, Hill Country Equestrian, Texas Ranch Life... have you been to any of those? Any others you'd recommend?

My plan would be to fly in Thursday evening and drive to wherever for Friday and Saturday , maybe do some riding ... stay until Sunday morning and get into town for the rodeo that day and on to the conference hotel that night.

Is there still ongoing, nightmarish freeway construction and are we better off just staying somewhere in town over the weekend as well?

Bottom line,I'd be grateful for lodging recommendations and good tex mex suggestions!

Thank you!

That's a great time to go to Houston. The weather is usually fantastic and the wildflowers should be in bloom around the state. The rodeo is really fun; be sure to check out the midway carnival area with all the food. There are some great concerts at the rodeo too.

We have not gone horseback riding in the area, but if it were me, I'd take a look at places near Austin or the Hill Country.

El Tiempo, Guadalajara, Escalante's, and Pappasito's are popular for Tex Mex. Churrasco's is excellent if you want something with a South American slant. Some people like Irma's and Sylvia's, but those aren't my favorites. If you're here during the Azalea Trail, that's a fantastic home tour with beautiful gardens in the River Oaks area. Bayou Bend in particular is really beautiful.

If you decide to stay in Houston, Hotel Sorella at CityCentre was just named one of the best hotels in the country. There are tons of good restaurants in CityCentre. Hotel ZaZa is popular too.

Chuy's is another good spot for Tex Mex.

http://www.riveroaksgardenclub.org/AzaleaTrail.cfm shows the dates for the Azalea Trail if you happen to be in Houston that weekend. River Oaks is one of the swankier areas of town.

I believe Lost Pines has horseback riding; you might check with Hyatt Hill Country Resort as well.
