Hotels in New York City for late July

My wife and I would like to spend a couple of nights in Manhattan for our anniversary. She has never been to the city and we would like something that is centrally located. We don't mind spending 200-300 per night. Just looking for a starting point. My previous trip to New York I stayed at the Roosevelt.
Thanks!!

I always recommend the Royalton, partly because it's a good hotel and partly because it's on a quiet block, but mostly because I think a midtown location is best for a first-time visit. There is no single central location for al of NYC's many attractions, but you can walk to many of the most iconic ones from Midtown. Enjoy!

Actually, that is low for this time of year. Try Pod Hotel; the one on 39th is in Murray Hill, a great area and easy to get just about anywhere in NYC.

The Affinia group might have something.

Agree that is a fairly basic budget. What type of place are you looking for? And do you have any special plans? do you have show tickets yet? (Discounts should be available now on broadwaybox.com.)

Not true about the budget. There are loads of really good midtown hotels available in that price range. For example:

You guys have given not only discouraging but incorrect information.

NewbE, I'm not about to join Jetsetter just to see what they are saying, but isn't it just like other sites that tell you about specials being offered by hotels? For example, I notice they list The Standard for $198 a night, but when I go to the website for The Standard, I can't find any weekend in late July for less than $425 for their cheapest room. Are you saying that if you join Jetsetter they'll get you that room for under $200?

I like jet setter, but the rates posted on first page should say "FROM" because when you plug in dates it is often much higher. For example, the Hudson shows $219, but when you click a date in late July -per OP- it is well over $400

I plugged in dates in late July for The Royalton and got $229. Some of the deals you have to prepay, which is the only downside I can see to using Jetsetter, and is the reason you can't see the same rates on the hotel websites--they're flash sales. I have used them before with fine results.

NewbE, I checked the Royalton on their own site and they offer a room for two the last weekend in July (all I checked) for %224 a night. (It's called their Anniversary Sale, and there is another rate at the same price). It doesn't say anything about prepayment. What is the point of Jetsetter again -- it allows you to prepay for the room and pay an additional $5 a night?

Not trying to be a wiseguy here, but it seems whenever someone talks about some third party group offering better prices, I seem to find the same price or better directly with the hotel.

Debit, exactly my thought. I always want to pick up a phone and call those sites and say "OK, you say they have rooms for $129. When can I go, because I'm totally flexible?" I never seem to be able to find ANY rooms for what they show at the beginning.

Check out the Hampton Inn near Madison Square Garden for some decent cheap rates.

Jetsetter certainly lists a LOT of hotels but very few are in the OPs price range. I don;t have exact dates - but the "from" is quite prominent. Certainly worth looking at - and noting that the prices listed are plus about 15% tax. And the ones listed at much lower rates are not where I would want to spend an anniversary.

Certianly for $300 there are a number of options - but it will take searching to find something more than quite basic.

Neo, obviously there is no point in using Jetsetter if the same rate can be had on the hotel's website.

You all seem married to the idea that $200-300 dollars won't buy anything but the most basic room in late July, but the facts contradict you, so I will stop arguing and let them speak for themselves.

No one is arguing, just trying to say that a lot of times, those bottom"from" prices are hard to come by...and often are just on a few nights. The one I looked at for The Hudson, the low rate was only on Sunday night, with the prices way higher during the week. And on the very first page, where all the hotels are listed, it does NOT say "from"; the only hotel I see is the Hudson and it simply says $219.

I actually use Sniqueaway [soon to merge with Jetsetter] and Jetsetter but the reality is that some of the lower rates listed are really limited. And since we don't know the OP's actual dates or what kind of hotel they want, we are all just trying share our input.

I have no horse in this race; but to say that we are giving incorrect information is not true. Having search for rooms in mid July, I know how hard a time I had finding a room in that range.

NewbE, I agree. It is usual here to insist you can't get a hotel room in NY for a reasonable price . It takes searching, but usually can be done. My point before was simply that looking at those rates listed on Jetsetter has little to do with the actual prices you'll find for a weekend in July.

Well we don;t know what the OP is looking for. I know that Hampton Inn, while I'm sure very acceptable - doesn't shout anniversary to me.

It may have everything that the OP wants - or he may have something different in mind.

Well, theOP does mention The Roosevelt. I'm not sure that shouts anniversary either. I don't think the OP is asking us to make a commitment, but simply looking for some suggestions in the price range. Several good suggestions have been made.

Take a look at the New York Palace. Construction's going on but the rates and location are great. We stayed there over Memorial Day weekend and the good rates made up for the inconveniences.

Travelzoo.com has some very good deals for centrally located hotels in NYC in late July. I was turned on to travel zoo for NYC hotels in particular by long time poster here, mclaurie, and I almost always get great deals for NYC hotels on that site.

I did a trip to New York one year ago (late June and early July). I found many rooms for $200-300 a night, but I needed a place for 5, it didn't help me personally. But it did seem like there were many options out there if you look far enough in advance. My main concern is that the OP is getting close to his trip and it could be difficult now. I would suggest he reserve something cancelleable right away and keep looking if he's not entirely happy with his "safety."
