The Four Points hotel near LAX airport has a 24-hour stay program that might work well for you...you can check in at say 9pm and not have to checkout until 9pm next evening, for example. While the airport area isn't especially inviting, the Marina with lots of dining is just 5 minutes away and Santa Monica beach is maybe 10-12 minutes.

On Saturday night a visit to the Getty Center would be nice. The (pricey) fine-dining restaurant is open for dinner on Saturday evenings and there is also a more casual garden cafe. The museum is open until 9pm as well and it is a spectacular setting near Beverly Hills/Bel Air.
Sunday you could do a seaside brunch, drive up through Malibu, over to the Palisades, Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Hollywood or wherever. Sunday traffic is usually not too bad especially in the morning. Then you could head back to the Marina for dinner and then a last-minute freshen up before checking out of the hotel.
I think there is a Hertz location in Lomita California that may offer pickup in San Pedro with no extra charge for dropping off at LAX. There is also an Avis in Long Beach and I believe an Enterprise near San Pedro.
The Getty is wonderful. It might be fun for your teens to go to the Santa Monica Pier. We went there after a visit to the Getty. I can't remember the name of the street, but leaving Getty it is a straight shot to the pier, about a 20-30 minute drive if I remember correctly. www.santamonicapier.org
Thanks, I will check into it, never heard of the Getty Center.
How is driving there, We are from Colorado, Not much trafic unless we go into denver.
