Neeti,
I'm not sure how long you're staying, but the first thing I would suggest would be seeing one of the Mansions. The Cliff Walk is nice (mansions on one side and the ocean on the other). If you're a tennis fan, the Tennis Hall of Fame is also in Newport.
Also, Thames St. is full of shopping and restaurants. Have fun!
We just returned from 2 nights at the Viking. Unless you have stayed there before and liked it, I would definately recommend finding other accommmodations. We were absolutely amazed at the prices they charged for such lousy accomodations. We're not from east podunk, but from the Boston area, where hotel prices are very high, and we are used to paying 200+ per night for a decent hotel. Viking does not qualify. Very rowdy crowd there, to the point of absurd ("This is hotel security. I am here to escort you out of the hotel. If you do not leave now, I will call the police." This at 2:00am at the door of the room across from us, after a party in the room next door the night before that lasted til 4am.) And, the bathrooms are, and I do not exaggerate, about 4 feet by 8 feet. Not kidding.
For alternatives, try Castle Hill Inn, south of town on Ocean, very nice, or even the Hyatt. Another possibility would be The Ivy Inn, or the Hotel Vanderbilt. But DO NOT stay at the Viking... I can't imagine being there with a 1 year old!
