Hi-
I am asking for recommendations of reasonably priced (less than $150) hotels, inns, or lodges for my 7-night stay in Western Oregon. I prefer not to stay in chains such as Best Western, Motel 6, Marriott, etc.
Here are the places we might end up spending the night:

Portland
Bend
Newport
Cannon Beach
Seaside
Florence
Eugene
Tillamook
I am all set for Crater Lake and Hood Mt. (Crater Lake Lodge and Timberline Lodge)

suesox, we just stayed a week in Bend. Although we were at a timeshare, I was struck by a cute B&B that we passed occasionally. It's close to downtown but off the main street in a pretty, green area. I just took a quick look at their website and see that a king bedded room is $135. Plus they serve breakfast.

I would suggest Yachats to stay instead of Florence and I usually stay at the Adobe- it is on the ocean, has nice views, walking path along the ocean and a restaurant- easy drive to Florence and Newport. There is another hotel next door, the Fireside - not sure of prices.

In Eugene you might look at Valley River Inn- it is on the river, may be more expensive unless there is a special going on.

In Bend the Old St Francis School is a fun place- walking distance to downtown- it is an old Catholic School turned into hotel and has kept many features of the school.

If you stayed in Yachats, you are close enough to Florence and Newport that you really would not have to move.

Just looked at the price of Valley River Inn- think you will not go for that price- but it is a great place to sit on the deck and look at the river- and there is a nice walking path. I frequently go and just have a drink and order off the bar menu for dinner.

Instead look at the Holiday Inn Express in Springfield- its new, nice , has a nice restaurant- but not walking distance to anything you would care to walk to. Convenient as it is right off I-5.

When you are cruising the coast, stop at my favorite beach ,Devils Elbow State Park ( also known as Heceta Head) Beautiful little cove, trail up to a beautiful lighthouse and the lighthouse keepers home ( now a B&B and a nice place to stay)
I love this spot.

In Newport we like at ocean room at the Hallmark, in Florence we like the Best Western Pier Point Inn (water view), in Eugene we like Inn at the 5th, and in Bend we like Hilton Garden Inn. These are all good places. You will like them.

We have never stayed in Tilamook or Seaside (for reasons you may discover), and it has been a long time since we stayed in Portland or Cannon Beach. When booking in Portland, it is worthwhile to check out the hotel deals from the Portland Visitors Center which include breakfast and parking: http://www.travelportland.com

Just south of Lincoln City - the Surfrider overlooking Depoe Bay has a great view -with a good restaurant and is reasonable.

Near Bend -you might enjoy a cabin on the two small lakes just east of there - about an hour or so -Paulina being one. http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/desch...71997&actid=42

Sun River area - south of Bend - is also nice.

And if you decide to stay in my old home town (I was just there for my 50th hs reunion) - the Running Y Resort is beautiful - set on 30 mile long Klamath Lake - with an Arnold Palmer designed golf course. www.runningy.com, or close.

Oops - Klamath Falls is my home town - but have to say - Ashland is also very cute with nice places to dine.

You don't mention when this trip is, and that will be a big factor in hotel rates. So without that info, here is some general info of places we like to stay that might be doable with your budget.

In Bend, I agree with the Old St Francis School. It is a McMenamin property which also has locations in Portland. Very unique and a lot of fun. We have stayed at most of their places and even the rooms with shared baths are not an issue. We have never had to wait for a bathroom/shower, and they have been spotless, FWIW.

Just south of Bend is Sunriver Resort, where we go several times a year. They have deals on Groupon/Living Social if you are going in the fall or spring, sort of their off season.

In Newport our usual place is the Elizabeth Street Inn. Right on the water, sort of on a bluff, but you can access the beach either from steps at the hotel next door or walk a block to the main entrance with a parking lot. Walkable to all the Nye Beach restaurants/shops.

In Cannon Beach, our go to place is the Surfsand. Again, in the off season you can get great deals! Otherwise take a look at the Cannon Beach Hotel and the Blue Gull Inn. We have stayed at these as well and the CBH is very nice, right next to the Surfsand. The BGI is a remodeled motel, but the room we have stayed it was completely redone and quite nice. A block or so from the beach and being a one story place, no views. The CBH usually has a discount on their website for fist time visitors, so check that as well. We have also stayed at Schooner's Cove, but it is like the Surfsand in that rates will fall in your budget most likely only if you are not in high season. Good hotel though, and great location.

The Holiday Inn Express that Sunbum mentioned for Eugene in the Springfield area, there is the Hop Valley Brewery that is next to it. We go there a lot, lol. Great food and brew

Do any of you know anything about Inn at Nye Beach in Newport?

Never stayed at the Inn at Nye Beach- usually stay at the Sylvia Beach Hotel- which is a very funky place- each room decorated with a different author for the theme. Price includes a breakfast- and they also have nice dinners.

Love the Nye Beach area- we usually check out Nana's Irish pub- sometimes they have music at night too and Cafe Mundo

In the Old Town part of Newport, I love eating at Local Ocean- not a fancy place but excellent food.

In Eugene another place you might look into is the La Quinta inn and Suites- good location as it is close to the river and walking paths. It is also close to the U of O football stadium so will likely sell out if there is a game being played while you are there.

I love the Valley River Inn, sunbum1944. I stayed there last Sept when I was visiting my sister. I rented one of their bikes twice to ride on the river path.

Birdie- VRI is very nice- great location, love going over for drinks on the deck in the summer- just live a few blocks from there, have never stayed there but I think would be rather pricey!

Seaside and Cannon Beach are close enough together that I would choose one or the other and then skip Tillamook. For downtown Portland, check out the Mark Hopkins which is about 2 blocks south of Powell's Books and across the street from Ken & Zuke's Jewish Deli.
For a unique place to spend in Bend check out McMennamin's.
Getting around Portland is easy with the TriMet system without the need for a rental car.

Cannon Beach is extremely expensive, more than you'd think. And some of those hotels have minimum stays, so you have to deal with that, also (2-3 nights, at least on weekends, in season). So you can't stay one night in many of them. I stayed at Lands End Inn which was really nice, but its rooms are more like $200-215.

Cannon Beach HOtel does have some rooms at $150, so that's worth checking out, it's very near the Lands End. I don't think mid-September is offseason, but I could be wrong. I know October onward is. The cheapest room at the Surfsand is about $160 in off-season, but most are a lot more.

Well, I've upped my rate to closer to $200/night in order to get a unique, perhaps historic inn or hotel. Now I'm looking for a place in or very close to Portland, but not one that would have a lot of noise into the night. (I found a couple intriguing ones, but it seems as if there is live music round-the-clock.) I did book a night at The Crystal Inn for the first night of our journey, but I want to stay somewhere different for the last night. I checked out Edgefield, but it doesn't have any rooms with a private bathroom available for Sept. 18th.

I'll check out the ones you've all suggested... Just putting out a call for additional suggestions.

The Inn at Northrup Station is unique- advertised as a boutique hotel. I have stayed there a couple of times and liked it. It is very retro, rooms are large, clean- had a small kitchen and the location is great. Also has free parking. It is on the trolley line- in the ad you can hear the sound of the trolley but I never heard it at night when I stayed.
It is walking distance to many restaurants and shops

Well, I have rooms booked for every night. Now it's down to airfare, rental car, and figuring out what to do as we drive from point to point. Thank you all for your suggestions. I truly appreciate them. If you ever want info about Massachusetts, especially the western third, let me know.
