My boyfriend and I just booked a long weekend at the Moderne through Expedia. We thought it looked fun and funky. Then we read the reviews on another site, which were pretty bad. Anyone have any comforting words on the Moderne? It is at 243 W 55th, at the south end of Central Park, just at the bottom of Broadway. We are gritty Chicagoans but feel like country bumpkins because we don't know the names of the neighborhoods or which way is Street and which is Ave. Help!

SMB,
We just stayed at the Park Central Hotel on 56th and 7th Avenue for $125/night. Great location and very nice hotel. got the rate on line. Check out Quickbook.com. I think you might be able to cancel your room through Expedia, but not sure.
Otherwise, your location is not bad at all, I just don't know the hotel.
Good luck
I can't vouch for the hotel, but the location is great - very convenient to Rockefeller center, Central Park, theater district, etc. Did you want to try to cancel those reservations or are you locked in? If you can cancel and are looking for a basic, clean hotel try checking out the Da Vinci hotel, here's the website: http://www.davincihotel.com/about.htm keep in mind that these are NOT fancy accommodations, but they seem to be running $90 night on weekends and they are at 244 West 56th. If you can familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods and do some research you might want to consider bidding on Priceline.com - make sure your checkout biddingfortravel.com before jumping in.
By the way, the Streets run east & west, the Aves north & south. Let us know what you do about your hotel & if you need suggestions for theater, food etc. You'll have a wonderful time!
You guys are great. We are probably going to stick it out with the hotel reservation. We are more concerned with having a good location, which it seems we have. So we are guessing this is called Midtown East? Any smashing restaurants in the $10-18 range? Also any funky never heard of museums that we should check out? Thanks for the tips.
