Hotel, inn, or B&B in Santa Fe, August 6-8, 2010

Hi, y'all. I usually post over on the Caribbean forums, but I'm making a quick trip out to Santa Fe to meet up with my husband who is there for a conference. We'd be willing to pay up to $200/night, including all taxes/charges/fees (including parking charges) but would naturally prefer to pay less. It's just two nights and we're looking for comfortable quarters that provide a real sense of place. If it's a convenient distance to St. John's College, where the conference is, so much the better. I prefer smaller inns and B&Bs while my husband gives a slight preference to more full-service places.

I've read the 2010 postings that I can find for Santa Fe accommodations but nothing jumped out at me immediately. Your suggestions?

My thanks,
emily

August is high season with the Indian Market a couple of weeks after your stay so lower rates come later in the year.

The college is south of the plaza area and just a 5-10 minute drive up Old Pecos Trail to get to the main area. The only hotel in that vicinity is the Residence Inn. I've stayed there and it has zero sense of place and is tired and dirty. I truly cannot recommend it.

Sage Inn would fit into the budget. Southwest decor, parking, a small continental breakfast and just southwest of the plaza. Walking is about 10-15 but they do offer a shuttle.

El Rey Inn is another choice for charming decor and parking. However, no breakfast and it isn't walking distance to the plaza. But, a very cute place.

The next suggestions are over $200 (I previewed my post and yours and saw the budget after I wrote the following):

For a larger place than a b&b (neither of these are large in the Hilton sense) I just pulled up Expedia to see what would fit close to the $200 night and the two I would recommend would be Inn of the Governors or Hotel Plaza Real. Either of those puts you in the plaza area and you would be able to sightsee without a car. (I'm guessing your husband will take the car for the day?) Each hotel has parking.

Both offer southwest decor and I believe Inn of the Governors is still offering a breakfast. Some rooms at the Inn faces the street but I've not heard of complaints of street noise but is possible with the kid's cars on a weekend night.

Hotel Plaza Real is next to Inn of the Anasazi which is a nice spot for a patio cocktail or dining inside.

For a B&B style, the sister spot to El Farolito, which is not available your weekend, is Four Katchinas. It's a very charming spot that oozes "sense of place" and serves up a nice variety of items for breakfast from hot to cold.
The location is good for both of you as he can get on Old Pecos Trail to head up to the college and you are just a few blocks from the plaza area.

Four Kachinas offers more charm and sense of place than the other two but I don't think you can go wrong with any of the three I mentioned.

Wow, thanks BeachGirl! That is one of the most thorough replies I've ever seen. I had already started searching online based on Trip Advisor ratings and the top dozen or spots were already completely booked for my dates, so your post is extremely helpful.

Sorry if it was long winded. You picked a subject I like talking about -- Santa Fe!

If you find others you have questions about feel free to ask.

Long winded? Are you kidding? It was invaluable! We ended up trying to book one of the last two rooms in The Four Kachinas this morning through their website. Not sure if it was confirmed or not since I had to leave to go to work, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks again for you input!

Just wanted to report back that we stayed at The Four Kachinas b&b and it was just wonderful. The hosts were gracious and took good care of us, the location was perfect, the room was bursting with southwest charm, the breakfast was tasty & ample, and all for a good value in high season. Thanks for the rec!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I think it's such a charming place, too.
