Hotel in Santa Barbara

Could someone recommend a quaint hotel, motel, in Santa Barbara, Ca for 2 adults that we can walk to from the train station and near the beach. We do not want to pay a lot, just something nice and quaint. By a lot I mean I would like to pay under $200, less if we can. Our plan is to go there in May.

The Eagle Inn

Lavender Inn by the Sea

Villa Rosa Inn

and I think the Best Western Peppertree has a shuttle from the station.

The Holiday Inn Express is converted from an old hotel, and it is near the train station. We asked for a quiet room and we were given a pleasant one on the back of the building.

Have you looked at the Fess Parker Doubletree?
http://www.fessparkersantabarbarahot...nd-directions/
It's slightly under $200/night
My DW and I stayed at the Sandland in Carpenteria for less than $90/night. It wasn't fancy but OK for sleeping.

I wouldn't call the Fess Parker quaint..it's huge, altho it is on the beach.
And Lavendar In is a renovated motel, def not quaint. Of all these I liked the Villa Rosa.

Has anyone heard of Alamar Motel, my friend couldn't quite remember the name of the place they stayed at a few years ago but thought it might be Alamar Motel. I'll check out the rest of the suggestions, I would like it to at least be across the street from the beach.

Across the street from the beach won't be quaint, it will be popular and traffic-noisy.

There is a motel called the AlaMar but the reviews on TA are awful....definitely not quaint.

OK, maybe I should not have used the word quaint, we just want something clean and reasonably priced across the street from the beach and walkable from the train station.

This little place is right across from the marina. It's motel-like, with free parking. Very cute and clean, with continental breakfast included. I don't know how close it is to the train station, though.

I am going to drive there during my lunch and check this out for you. I believe some of the hotels mentioned here are well over a mile or two away from the train station and you may not want to be lugging your luggage that far.

What I'm getting at, is that you may want to call a taxi to take you from the train station to your hotel and then enjoy the rest of your stay! Will post back in a few hours!

Also, many of the hotels will be booked by now and most, if not all, will have two night minimums on the weekend... so do you have exact dates for when you are coming?

sbfrench1:

When walking from the train station, the closest hotel is the Harbor View Inn, which is right across the street from Stearns Wharf. There is a lot of traffic on the street there and its a noisy hotel if you stay in one of the ocean view rooms. ( Yes, I know this from experience.) I don't think you can get a room there for under $280.00 per night anyway.

The Fess Parker Doubletree is along Cabrillo Boulevard, to the south, about a mile down the street and is farther set back from the road, so no noise problems. Not inexpensive, but you might be able to find a room for under $200.00 per night if you have AAA or pay 21 days in advance of your visit.

The Best Western on Cabrillo, Hotel Oceana and the WestBeach Inn are all right there along the street. I would check tripadvisor for reviews. I ihaven't stayed in any of them personally.

The other inns mentioned, like Lavender, Castillo and Eagle are down the street and around the corner... no ocean views but probably quieter.

If all you want is the beach.. could you consider Montecito? You could stay at the Montecito Inn and walk to Butterfly Beach which is quieter with way less people. Plenty of good restaurants within walking distance in Montecito and a lot less people.

As I mentioned before, I think your options are going to be limited due to the fact that you haven't booked yet. Good luck!

Forgot to add, I would take a taxi from the train station to any of these places... won't cost more than a few dollars and will be much more comfortable for you. It can be freezing, cold and windy here in May!

We stayed at the good place I mentioned and took the shuttle bus to the water. It worked out great and we were close to all the downtown activity. http://www.sbmtd.gov/maps-and-schedu...t-shuttle.html

Thank you all and most of all to Lynni, how nice of you to go look up the hotels. We would be going for 2 nights on a Monday and Tuesday. $280 is way too expensive at the Harbor View, I'll check out the rest of the hotels. We just want somewhere clean to sleep in that is walkable to the beach and restaurants.

We stayed at the Castillo Inn last Monday May 19 for 2 nights. We took the train from San Juan Capistrano, CA, Great train ride. It was a breeze to walk to the motel from the train station. We were too early for check in so we went to have lunch at the harbor.

The room was quite nice. We had a king size bed, there was a flat screen TV with HBO, a little sitting area with a couch and a newly remodeled bathroom. Very nice and very clean. I looked at all other comparable hotels, motels, when we returned home and this was by far the best deal. The only negative was the lady in the next room was outside by our door sitting in a chair and smoking. We wanted to open the door for fresh air but all we got was smoke inhalation. Wished the establishment would have been all non smoking but whatever, we will go back.

Now, if you're looking for a resort with a pool and amenities this is not the place for you, we just wanted a clean room and then go out and do our own thing. Thank you for the recommendation.
