Hotel in Jackson, MS

Almost exactly a year ago I stayed at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Jackson. It had been purchased by Marriott and was in the midst of a renovation. I got the Crowne on a $50 a night bid through Priceline. I liked the hotel and the location. I could walk to the Governor's Mansion, the State Capitol, the art museum, and a few other sights.
The Edison Walthall Hotel is right downtown too. I liked the bar but did not stay there.
I had a wonderful dinner at the Mayflower downtown, a BYOB place that has very good seafood. I had a nice lunch at the Elite. It served beer and had chicken livers. It had turquoise vinyl booths and counter service. It was like stepping back in time to the '50s.
A place called something like Millies was on the east edge of downtown. They had live music on the weekends. There was a street on the west edge of downtown that was being renovated into a music/bar area. I don't know how that's come along.
I enjoyed my time in Jackson. I found plenty to do for a couple of days. I especially enjoyed the art exhibit at the arts pavilion that had the Treasures of Dresden exhibit in progress.

The Millsaps Buie House was a FANTASTIC recommendation. It really made my trip so special, and my colleagues in Jackson were also happy to learn of its existence. The women who worked there were so excellent. I'm also not a fan of B&Bs and I would happily recommend it to anyone!

All of indytravel's suggestions are good. If you are looking for another b&b downtown, the Old Capitol Inn is a GREAT choice. They also serve lunch in a darling little restaurant on the ground floor. Another good b&b choice is the Fairview Inn. A great location (not right in the middle of the business district; rather, it's next to the nicely-landscaped campus of a local college), and wonderful food.
The Mariott has been totally re-done, and it's gorgeous. It's right downtown, within walking distance of the city's art museum and planetarium.
The food choices that indytravel mentioned are also good ones. You might also want to check out the Lamar Street Restaurant (also downtown).
However, if you are visiting on the weekend, do NOT stay downtown unless you will have a vehicle at your disposal. Most of downtown is a business district, so alot of the restaurants close up during the weekend, although the attractions (museums, etc.) remain open. Just be aware.
