Hotel in Biloxi or Gulfport MIssissippi
We will be traveling Houston to Florida the first week in January and would like a recommendation for a hotel somewhere halfway which would be Biloxi or Gulfort. Any of the casino's offer grounds to walk around or explore? Or, maybe a mom and pop motel with a quaint little town to walk around for a few hours? Not particular, just a place to explore for a few hours.

You can probably get a decent deal at any of the Biloxi casino hotels.
The best ones for walking around and "exploring" are probably the Hard Rock and the Beau Rivage, which are right next door to each other. But they are also the most expensive. The Isle of Capri will probably offer the cheapest deals, and it's fine, if a bit old and tired.
There are also a few budget chain places clustered around the area near the interstate exit at 110. There isn't really anything "quaint" though. If you want a quaint little town to walk around in, you will have to visit Ocean Springs on the other side of the Biloxi bridge. It has a cute downtown area with art galleries and restaurants, and it also has a few motels, but they aren't really in the downtown area, they are again near the interstate exit.

I took the old and tired
the Beau did not have availability for Jan 2 and the Hard Rock and the Grand were over 200.00 so, I booked the The Isle of Capri. Anything interesting in that area to walk to? or drive to? Thanks.

I've stayed at the Isle many times and it's perfectly acceptable. And it's just a short drive down to the Beau Rivage and the Hard Rock for more dining options and a cooler casino vibe.
