Hotel Deluxe or Hotel Monaco in Portland?
We were going to stay at the Hotel Monaco per reviews of this hotel. Yet they are
quite a bit more expensive than Hotel Deluxe that gets good reviews and is on the
list for the top 100 hotels in the US. Do they both have equally as good location?
We want to be able to walk to Saturday Market, restaurants, and Powells books.
Any suggestions?

Look at the location of both on a Google map. Hotel Deluxe is at about 16th Avenue; the Monaco is at about 5th Avenue. So the Deluxe is about ten blocks further from the river and the heart of downtown Portland than the Monaco is. It's also just outside the Free Rail Zone to be able to hop on the MAX train to get around town. You can walk from the Deluxe down to the first free MAX stop at about 10th, though. (Also to the Portland Streetcar stop nearby.)
On the upside, both hotels are about equidistant from Powell's.
The Deluxe really is away from the center of town - not a bad area at all, not a far walk from the Pearl District, just slightly removed from everything. Portland is an easy walking city, so if you like to walk, not a big problem. If they were both the same price, I'd definitely choose the Monaco if it were me, based on location.
It's been a few years since I've been inside both hotels - both were remodeled and renamed a few years ago, so my knowledge of them isn't current.
Checked for specials at TravelPortland.com ?

Andrew summed up my thoughts on their locations and such. Even with living here, we have stayed at the Monaco a few times for special events. I really like the hotel! I have not stayed at the DeLuxe, so can't comment. Even if they were equal, I would give the nod to the Monaco for location.

Agree--especially if you are a first time visitor, the Monaco's location is preferable.
Also, make sure you're comparing apples to apples on the price--the least expensive rooms at the Deluxe are shoebox tiny.

My wife walked by herself to Powells twice last summer from Hotel Deluxe. It is my understanding that the rooms are small in HD. However, they gave us a very large corner room that was great. It is about a 5-7 minute walk to Powells from HD. It did seem like it was in a rather odd location.
